"Hot" extracurricular subject in Vietnam
Present in Vietnam since 2015, after 10 years, debate has become the "hottest" extracurricular subject in secondary and high schools in recent years. The Regional Round of the WSC season held in Hanoi in May 2025 attracted more than 2,000 contestants, about 1.3 times higher than the previous season.
The main competition categories of WSC include essay writing, debate, and general knowledge. Specifically, WSC has 4 sections divided into 2 halves: Skill section (including Collaborative Writing and Debate) and knowledge section (including Challenge and Scholar's Bowl: General knowledge test on many different topics: Music, history, fine arts, technology, geography, socio- politics ).
Top 3 Team Bowl: Nguyen Vu Huu Duc, Hoang Van Minh Duc, Ngo Doanh Chau brought the national flag in their luggage "to a foreign land".
According to coach Ngu To Duy, playgrounds like WSC, debate or essay writing help students practice critical thinking, listening skills and gradually form independent thinking. "When students have confidence and basic knowledge, they will be able to debate and face challenges," said Mr. Duy.
To participate in WSC, candidates must study a 2,000-page English syllabus with many specialized topics: Science , technology, classical literature, famous symphonies, prestigious scholars or political and social issues.
Students who want to win prizes must not only memorize but also deeply understand the knowledge to analyze and predict situations. The process of accumulating a large amount of knowledge requires endurance and the right learning method to exploit potential.
The WSC competition starts with regional rounds in 60 countries. The contestants with the highest ranking in the regional round will receive invitations to participate in the global round at locations around the world (BangKok, London, Dubai, Seoul,...).
The contestant with the highest score in the Global round will continue to meet at Yale University (USA) in the "Season of Champions" to compete in the final round.
