According to Xinhua News Agency, the shooting occurred on the evening of September 27 (local time) at a bar in Southport, North Carolina.
"A gunman on a boat opened fire on a crowd at a waterfront bar in Southport around 9:30 p.m. on September 27," ChyAnn Ketchum, the city's public information officer, said, adding that one person was taken into custody and questioned.

At a press conference around 1 a.m. on September 28, Southport Police Chief Todd Coring said there is currently no threat to the community. The motive for the shooting is under investigation.
"I can say that we do not have any further threat to the community at this time," Coring police stressed.
Earlier, in a statement on social media, Southport authorities urged people to avoid the area and stay indoors for safety while the investigation was underway.
According to ABC News, the city of Southport has about 4,300 residents, located near the mouth of the Cape Fear River.
