Building a production chain, red-fleshed dragon fruit opens up wide output

On June 21, 5 tons of red-fleshed dragon fruit from Quynh Thuan Agricultural Cooperative, Chieng Pha commune and 27 households in Chieng Pha and Phong Lai communes - Thuan Chau district - Son La were officially exported to the Italian market.

Exporting dragon fruit to Italy

Previously, this product was also exported to the Russian Federation and effectively consumed in domestic distribution channels such as markets and supermarkets. This is a clear demonstration of the effectiveness of chain linkage, linking production with product consumption in Son La.

Currently, the whole Son La province grows over 300 hectares of dragon fruit; concentrated in Mai Son, Thuan Chau, Yen Chau districts, Son La city... with an output of nearly 5,000 tons/year. Of which, Thuan Chau is the district that grows the most dragon fruit.

In 2018, Thuan Chau district began building a chain for red-fleshed dragon fruit products by linking with Ngoc Hoang cooperative to supply seeds, instruct people on care techniques and consume products. This is one of eight production chains for sustainable fruit tree development in Thuan Chau district.

To date, the district has 50 hectares of red-fleshed dragon fruit, of which 44 hectares are linked in chains, mainly concentrated in the communes of Chieng Pha, Phong Lai, Phong Lang, and Muong E. In 2024, the harvested dragon fruit output is estimated to reach over 500 tons, with an average selling price of 30,000 to 35,000 VND/kg.

In addition to continuing to maintain production links for products, including dragon fruit, Thuan Chau district is continuing to coordinate with the Department of Science and Technology of the province to build a brand for Son La dragon fruit with specific growing areas, thereby helping this local product to increasingly affirm its brand in domestic and foreign markets, contributing to increasing people's income.

According to the plan, in addition to supplying dragon fruit to the domestic market, Thuan Chau district, Son La province also strives to officially export 60 tons of red-fleshed dragon fruit to the markets of the UK, France, Russia, Italy, some Middle Eastern countries and the EU market in 2024. The successful export of red-fleshed dragon fruit to the European market through official channels contributes to creating stable output, increasing product value, and sustainable development for this crop, and striving to achieve the district's export value target of 325 billion VND in 2024.

According to statistics from the agricultural sector of Son La province, the province has currently built, maintained and developed 280 safe agricultural, forestry and fishery chains. In addition, 294 growing area codes have been granted to 43 establishments. There are 27 products that have been granted trademark protection bearing the province's geographical name; 98 establishments have applied the valid VietGAP and GlobalGAP good agricultural production practices; the "One Commune One Product" (OCOP) program has attracted the participation of many enterprises, cooperatives and business households; to date, the province has 151 OCOP products that have been certified from 3 to 5 stars.

Chain linkage brings many benefits to enterprises, cooperatives, producers, domestic consumers and exporters. Through that, it creates a connection in the value chain of sustainable agricultural production and consumption, widely applies agricultural science and technology to production, and creates quality products to supply the market.
