This review was conducted following the request of Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee Nguyen Van Duoc to assess the overall facilities and teaching equipment at public schools.
The results show that the number of classrooms and subject rooms needing repair accounts for a large proportion: 1,370 primary school rooms, 1,038 secondary school rooms, 845 preschool rooms, with a total estimated cost of more than 616 billion VND.
In addition, there are 125 seriously degraded schools that are at risk of being unsafe. Of which, 40 are preschools; 53 are primary schools; and 29 are secondary schools.
"The reason these schools were built more than 20 years past their useful life is that they are severely degraded, and small repairs are ineffective and a waste of investment capital," said Mr. Nguyen Van Hieu, Director of the Department of Education and Training.

Along with repairing facilities, the Department of Education and Training proposed to invest 72 billion VND to purchase 28,756 sets of tables and chairs, 5,604 computers and 2,940 audio-visual equipment, with priority given to primary and secondary schools.
Director of the Department of Education and Training Nguyen Van Hieu proposed that the city allocate funds for communes, wards, and special zones to proactively assess, develop plans for periodic repairs and maintenance, and avoid recurrence of deterioration.
Another problem is the pressure of 300 classrooms/10,000 people (from 3 to 18 years old) in the area is still inadequate. Before merging with Binh Duong and Ba Ria - Vung Tau , Ho Chi Minh City reached 297 classrooms and is expected to reach 300 classrooms by the end of 2025. After the merger, this ratio decreased to 277 classrooms, because the area of 3 provinces of Binh Duong only reached 200 classrooms.
