5 children poisoned after drinking red medicine tube found

On January 23, information from the National Children's Hospital said that recently, the hospital has consecutively admitted 8 children poisoned by rat poison, including a cluster of cases in Tuyen Quang.

Specifically, the cluster of cases includes 5 children (aged 7-9 years old, in Tuyen Quang) hospitalized with vomiting, headache, stomachache, and one child had convulsions.

After collecting information, the doctors learned that one of the children had picked up some red tubes of medicine in a plastic bag and shared them with his friends. After drinking, the children vomited, had stomachaches, headaches, and some had convulsions.

These children were transferred to Tuyen Quang Provincial General Hospital for treatment and then transferred to the National Children's Hospital.

Here, all children were diagnosed with fluoroacetate rat poison poisoning based on clinical and toxicology test results. The children were closely monitored and actively treated. Currently, the children's health is progressing well, but they still need to be closely monitored by doctors to prevent dangerous complications.

The Emergency and Poison Control Department also admitted two boys (8 and 10 years old, from Hoa Binh ) who had to be hospitalized due to rat poison poisoning.

Through information from the family, it was learned that the two children mistakenly ate chicken eggs injected with rat poison that the family was using to make rat traps.

After 3-4 hours of eating chicken eggs injected with rat poison, both children developed symptoms of dizziness and nausea and were taken to the provincial hospital by their families. Afterwards, the children were transferred to the National Children’s Hospital for emergency treatment.

Here, doctors determined that the children were poisoned by rat poison containing bromadiolone, a substance that causes prolonged blood clotting disorders. After 1 week of treatment and monitoring at the Emergency and Poison Control Department, both children were stable and discharged from the hospital.

Another patient in Ha Tinh is a 3-year-old girl. After accidentally drinking rat poison in a tube that her grandmother used to trap rats, the child vomited a lot but remained conscious.

On the third day after drinking, the child began to show signs of decreased consciousness and convulsions. After receiving first aid at the Provincial Hospital, the child was transferred to the National Children's Hospital for further treatment.

The child was admitted to the hospital with neurological damage, convulsions, agitation, and abnormal movements. The MRI showed brain damage and rat poison was found in the sample. After more than a week of intensive treatment and close monitoring, the child’s health has stabilized and he has just been discharged from the hospital.

The leader of the National Children's Hospital said that near Tet, there were consecutive cases of poisoning being admitted to the hospital.

In addition to the eight cases of rat poison poisoning, the hospital also admitted two children with respiratory failure due to mistakenly drinking oil used to light an altar lamp.

The patients are an 18-month-old child from Yen Bai and a 16-month-old child from Thai Nguyen. Both children were hospitalized in a state of respiratory failure, severe lung damage, coma and impaired consciousness due to mistakenly drinking oil used to light an altar lamp.

Family investigation revealed that both children mistakenly drank oil from bottles and jars that were decanted by the family but not labeled and left within the children's reach.

At the National Children's Hospital, the children were treated with ventilators to prevent respiratory failure, antibiotics, anti-inflammatory drugs and closely monitored for vital signs. After 5 days of intensive treatment, the condition of the two children has improved, however, they still need to be monitored for possible complications.

Doctors warn that during the time before Tet, when adults are busy preparing for Tet, just a moment of inattention can cause accidents for children. Therefore, adults need to always keep an eye on children and keep dangerous objects out of their reach.
