After completing her studies, she returned to Vietnam in 1960, working at the Faculty of Mathematics, Hanoi National University of Education, both teaching and doing scientific research. During this time, she wrote her thesis “Gr-category theory” under the guidance of the famous French mathematician Alexander Grothendieck.

The second person is Ms. Le Thi Thanh Nhan, recognized as a mathematics professor in 2015.

The third person is Ms. Ta Thi Hoai An, recognized as a mathematics professor in 2023.

According to many experts, women in the field of Mathematics face many barriers due to family responsibilities, causing the number of female scientists to be less than that of men.

Professor Dr. Le Tuan Hoa, Chairman of the Mathematics Professorship Council, former Director of the Institute of Mathematics, once said that the Mathematics industry always evaluates fairly, without gender discrimination: Only qualified applications will be considered.

According to Professor Le Tuan Hoa, up to now, Vietnam has 103 people who have been awarded the title of Professor of Mathematics. Of these, about 82 are still alive, and only about 40 are under 70 years old, including two female professors, Ta Thi Hoai An and Le Thi Thanh Nhan. (Professor Hoang Xuan Sinh is over 90 years old this year).

The number of new professors awarded in recent years is: 1 in 2021; 3 in 2022; 4 in 2024.

Professor Le Tuan Hoa commented that it is understandable that there are few female math professors: In the past, few women studied math; moreover, economic conditions and family responsibilities made it difficult for them to pursue science in general and math in particular.

However, Mr. Hoa said that the income from Math is not high, so the number of male students studying Math is decreasing; the number of female students is increasing, accounting for more than 50%. Therefore, in the future, the number of female professors may increase.
