Young Philippine tennis star Alex Eala is showing a strong comeback by continuously defeating opponents in the world's top 70 to advance to the second round of the WTA 250 Eastbourne Open 2025.
In the first round this afternoon (June 23), Eala took just over an hour to defeat Lucia Bronzetti (world No. 59) with a score of 2-0 (6-0, 6-1). Eala's overwhelming performance not only helped her qualify for the second round, but also knocked the Italian player out of the top 60, falling to No. 61 when the WTA rankings were updated later today (Vietnam time). Eala jumped 3 places to No. 74 in the world.
In the match, although Bronzetti managed to equalize 1-1 at the beginning of the second set, Eala quickly regained the initiative and completely dominated the rest to close out an impressive victory.
This convincing streak also marks the strong return of the young Filipino tennis player after a period of not-so-successful competition since making a splash and making his name known at the Miami Open.

Before that, the 19-year-old tennis player had to start her journey at the tournament from the qualifying round, where she successively defeated Zeynep Sonmez (Türkiye, ranked 82nd) and Hailey Baptiste (USA, ranked 56th) to gain the right to enter the main round.
With the WTA rankings updated earlier this week, Sonmez dropped six places after losing to Eala, while Baptiste rose two places.
In the second round, Eala will face the winner of the match between Sonay Kartal (England, world number 49) and third seed Jelena Ostapenko (Latvia, world number 20).
Among them, Ostapenko is the name she shocked when she defeated in the second round of the Miami Open in March, marking a big turning point in her journey to reach the top 100.
