(CLO) Google announced on November 26 that it is assisting Indian authorities in investigating an accident that killed three men after their car plunged into a river from an unfinished bridge, allegedly while following directions on Google Maps.
The incident happened early Sunday morning (November 24) in Uttar Pradesh state, northern India. The group of victims were on their way to a wedding when the car suddenly plunged into the Ramganga river from an unfinished bridge.

According to the Hindustan Times, the driver followed the route indicated by Google Maps, even though the road leading to the bridge was not yet completed.
Police have questioned a Google Maps executive, as well as employees of the local Public Works Department, according to the Press Trust of India news agency.
A Google spokesman sent his condolences to the victims' families and said the company is working closely with authorities to assist in the investigation.
A local police officer said the bridge was damaged in a flood last year but has not been fully repaired yet, leading to the unfortunate accident.
This is not the first time an accident has occurred involving directions on a location app. Last year, two doctors were killed in the southern Indian state of Kerala when their car plunged into the Periyar River after following directions on Google Maps.
These incidents once again highlight the need to use technological tools with caution, and raise questions about the responsibility of both location service providers and local authorities in ensuring traffic safety.
