Indian Railways, the world's fourth-largest rail network, operates about 14,000 trains a day with 8,000 locomotives on a vast network of about 64,000 kilometers (40,000 miles). Carrying more than 21 million passengers a day puts the world's most populous country's rail network under enormous pressure. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has pushed a $30 billion modernization of India's rail infrastructure to boost the economy and connectivity.
