Viettel system replaces manual combat command in air defense missile exercises

Viettel High Tech develops VQ2 System — automation, shortening decision time, improving airspace protection capabilities

Combat team rehearsal of the 2025 Air Defense Missile Regiment command post The Air Defense - Air Force from September 15-19 first applied the VQ2 System researched and developed by Viettel in the command and operation of the Air Defense - Air Force.

This is considered a breakthrough in national airspace protection technology, marking a fundamental change in the command and operation organization method of the Air Defense - Air Force (PK-KQ) and affirming Vietnam's high-tech defense industrial capacity.

At Regiment 282 of Division 375, within the framework of the sports festival taking place from mid-September, combat teams for the first time put into practice the VQ2 National Airspace Surveillance and Protection System, also known as the VQ2 System, researched and developed by Viettel High Tech, the main unit in the high-tech sector of Viettel Group, in coordination with the Air Defense - Air Force.

Replace manual recording and information processing

In a hypothetical situation where a strange aircraft enters the airspace managed by Regiment 282, instead of the entire combat crew having to continuously listen, take notes and exchange information via the traditional "alo" channel to assess the situation and command the force, the VQ2 System displays the entire picture of the airborne situation, complete and accurate in real time.

The system automatically assesses the situation, assesses the danger level of flying targets in the area, and supports the combat crew in assigning tasks to forces and equipment to destroy the targets.

The application of VQ2 marks a clear shift in the method of organizing operations: replacing most of the traditional recording, manual exchange and map operations with digital data updated in real time, thereby significantly shortening the commander's decision-making time and improving the accuracy of operating and distributing tasks to the fire force.

Major General Vu Dai Duong, Deputy Commander of the Air Defense - Air Force Service, said: "The automated command system helps commanders and combat crews identify the nature of targets as well as quickly make decisions to destroy targets; in a very short time, almost real time."

Step forward to protect the Fatherland's airspace

VQ2 is an automated command and control platform for air defense and air defense operations, serving at the Command Center at all levels from unit to national level. From radar data, communications and sensor sources, VQ2 analyzes, filters interference, assesses the enemy situation, our situation, calculates combat scenarios and proposes timely solutions to the commander.

In modern combat conditions, when a "swarm" of flying targets appears in large numbers, the system's ability to simultaneously process multiple targets and propose reasonable solutions becomes a decisive factor in helping combat crews be more proactive in organizing and managing airspace.

The actual exercise showed clear differences between the traditional method and the VQ2 application method. Previously, from the time the radar team detected the target until the information was reported to the military level, it usually took 3-5 minutes due to having to go through many stages of recording, verifying and reporting.

Colonel Luu Ho Anh, Deputy Head of the VQ2 Project Management Board, emphasized that with VQ2, this time has been reduced to only 5-10 seconds, creating a leap in response speed and target processing efficiency.

Data and practical experience show that combat crews have significantly reduced manual workload, more intuitive operations and faster decision making thanks to the system's automatic calculation support.

As the direct commander of the exercise, Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Anh Thai, Commander of Regiment 282, shared that the participation of the smart system significantly reduces the work previously done by humans, helping the combat crew operate faster, more accurately and master the sky more effectively.

This exercise is also large-scale: 14 missile regiments of the entire Army take turns practicing hypothetical situations. The entire process from preparation, combat practice to reporting and drawing lessons after the battle is all carried out on the VQ2 system.

The widespread deployment in 14 missile regiments shows that VQ2 is no longer a single test but has proven its applicability and suitability to combat requirements.

Combat crews from various units commented that the system is easy to operate, intuitive and smart, helping to shorten decision-making time compared to traditional methods.

In addition to its effectiveness in combat, the fact that Viettel and the Air Defense - Air Force Service have mastered the design principles and developed control software for the system has strategic significance.

According to Mr. Nguyen Dinh Viet - Project Manager of VQ2 System of Viettel High Tech, this is a complex system that not many countries in the world can transfer; technology autonomy helps reduce foreign dependence, while creating a foundation for continued research and integration of new technologies such as Big data, AI to increase the ability to self-process, propose combat plans, and increase combat effectiveness for combat crews.

In a broader view, VQ2 is part of the efforts to develop high-tech equipment, contributing to the modernization of the Army. VQ2, along with many other technologies developed by Viettel engineers, has marked a new development step of the Vietnamese Defense Industry, improving combat readiness, avoiding the Fatherland being passive and surprised in all situations.

The achievements in developing high-tech equipment of Viettel have contributed to our Army's "shortcuts and anticipation", building a revolutionary, disciplined, elite, and modern force, meeting the requirements of protecting the Fatherland in the new situation.
