Apple Inc. on September 9 introduced an upgraded new iPhone lineup, including a thinner iPhone Air, and kept prices unchanged as US President Donald Trump's tariffs have negatively affected the company's profits.
At the event, Apple introduced a brand new, thinner iPhone "Air" model with a "high-density battery" and an all-new processor, along with the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Pro models - the latest upgrades to the company's flagship smartphone line.
Apple also launched a new version of its AirPods Pro wireless headphones and a blood pressure monitoring feature in its latest Apple Watch.
According to Apple, the base iPhone 17 model will have a brighter, more scratch-resistant display. The product line will be equipped with a new A19 Pro processor chip manufactured with 3-nanometer chip technology and capable of improving artificial intelligence (AI) features on the device. The iPhone 17 will also have a better front camera with a differently shaped sensor for better horizontal selfies.
A 256GB version of the base iPhone 17 will start at $799, the same as the previous iPhone 16 model, which had half the storage. The iPhone 17 Pro will start at $1,099 for the 256GB model, the same as last year's model with the same storage, but without the option of a smaller phone for less than $999 like the iPhone 16 Pro.
Meanwhile, the new iPhone Air model is the focus of Apple's annual product launch, as the company claims it is the most durable iPhone model ever.
Apple says the iPhone Air will also feature the A19 Pro chip, which has been tweaked for better power efficiency and performance, allowing for a thinner battery.
There's also a new N1 chip for Wi-Fi connectivity and a new C1X modem for cellular data. The chips that power these functions on Apple's high-end devices have long been supplied by Broadcom and Qualcomm. Apple says this is "MacBook Pro-level computing power in an iPhone."
The device will have two cameras and remove the physical SIM card slot, freeing up more space for the battery. The iPhone Air is expected to have a market price of $999.
According to technology experts, the iPhone Air is expected to compete directly with Samsung Electronics' Galaxy S25 Edge slim phone line. This could also be a stepping stone for Apple to compete with Samsung's foldable screen phone product, which is now in its 7th generation.
Also at the event, Apple introduced a new version of its AirPods Pro wireless headphones and a blood pressure monitor on the latest Apple Watch smartwatch.
The new AirPods Pro 3 will feature live translation in multiple languages. Apple also says that if both people in the conversation are wearing the new AirPods Pro 3, the headphones will translate the conversation in near real time.
However, the blood pressure monitoring feature on the Apple Watch is currently awaiting regulatory approval from US authorities. Apple currently expects this feature to notify the blood pressure status of 1 million people in 150 countries.
As analysts expected, Apple did not raise prices on the new Watch models or AirPods Pro 3. The price tag suggests Apple is willing to absorb the cost of tariffs to stave off competition from Samsung, Google and domestic rivals in China, even though the company has predicted the tariffs will cost it more than $1 billion in the current fiscal quarter.
The annual product launch event at Apple's headquarters in Cupertino, California, takes place amid turmoil in global trade./.
