According to a VNA correspondent in Kuala Lumpur, one of the key agendas of Malaysia at the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit in October will be the proposal to establish an ASEAN Halal Council – a mechanism to exploit the huge potential of the Halal industry and promote regional cooperation in this field.
Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who is also Chairman of the National Halal Council, affirmed that the formation of this council is important for ASEAN to enhance its position, promote and market Halal products globally. According to him, the potential of the Halal market in ASEAN with a population of more than 640 million people needs to be fully exploited before expanding to other large markets in the world .
Deputy Prime Minister Zahid said that Vietnam is ready to join the ASEAN Halal Council, co-chaired by Malaysia and Indonesia. The two sides had in-depth discussions on the development of the Halal industry, with Malaysia pledging to support Vietnam through the issuance of Jakim certification by the Malaysian Islamic Development Department and the organization of professional training courses. In addition, the two countries agreed to study the possibility of establishing a Halal industrial park in Vietnam.
