Poland makes breakthrough in applying robotic hip replacement surgery

Poland becomes the first country in the EU to apply robots in hip replacement surgery, improving accuracy and reducing complications for patients.

According to a VNA correspondent in Europe, Poland has just achieved a breakthrough in the field of orthopedic surgery when it became the third country - along with Belgium and Slovakia - in the European Union (EU) to successfully apply robotic technology in hip replacement surgery.

According to information from Professor Paweł Skowronek, Medical Director of Mazovian Bródno Hospital in Warsaw, this groundbreaking surgery was performed in early August 2025, marking an important step forward in the application of high technology in medicine.

The surgical procedure is performed with the help of an advanced artificial intelligence system. Doctors attach a navigation device to the robotic arm, allowing the system to calculate the optimal position of the hip implant and perform real-time diagnostic measurements.

The breakthrough of this technology is the ability to precisely position the joint, eliminating the need for separate MRI or CT scans, thereby minimizing the risk of complications and optimizing mobility for the patient.

Professor Skowronek emphasized that this is a completely new development in the field of orthopedic surgery, as previously robotic technology was only applied to knee surgery.

This method not only optimizes joint position, minimizing differences between limbs, but also expands range of motion and reduces the risk of dislocation, helping patients maintain physical activities in the future.

Nowadays, the age of patients needing hip replacement is getting younger, mainly due to modern lifestyles and the early onset of degenerative diseases. It is predicted that by 2050, the number of such surgeries in Europe will nearly double.

Mazovian Bródno Hospital performs about 2,000 surgeries each year, of which more than 1,000 are hip replacement surgeries using the minimally invasive MIS DAA technique - one of the most advanced methods in Poland./.
