Storm is approaching, waves are rumbling but people still carefreely go to My Khe beach to swim

The sky was gloomy, the waves were roaring, the waves were towering as Typhoon Than Gio approached, but there were still people who went swimming at My Khe beach, Quang Ngai. They braved the big waves and ignored the warnings of the authorities.

On the afternoon of October 21, when storm Than Gio (storm No. 12) gradually moved inland, at My Khe beach (Tinh Khe commune, Quang Ngai province), many people and tourists still went swimming and playing with 1-2 meter high waves, despite strong winds, heavy rain and warnings of danger from authorities.

According to records, at around 4pm the same day, the wind started to gust strongly, the rain was heavy, the sea was rough. Against the gray sky, large waves continuously crashed into the shore, but there were still groups of people swimming and taking pictures, regardless of the risk to their safety.

There were times when waves crashed in, but the group of people still laughed and talked carefreely, almost oblivious to the lurking danger, high waves that could pull them away from shore at any moment.

According to observation, the entire My Khe beach is about 3km long, there is only a group of nearly 10 people swimming.

Reflecting on this issue, Mr. Pham Quoc Vuong - Chairman of Tinh Khe Commune People's Committee - said that he had directed the beach management team to urgently go to the scene to remind and ask people to come ashore.

"People are too complacent while the weather is very dangerous. We are determined not to let anyone swim at this time to ensure their safety," said Mr. Vuong.

According to the Quang Ngai Hydrometeorological Station, due to the impact of storm No. 12, the sea area of Quang Ngai (including Ly Son) has strong winds of level 6-7, gusts of level 8, waves of 2.5-4.5m high, and very rough seas. It is forecasted that on the night of October 22, the wind will increase to level 7, gusts of level 8-9, waves of 3-5m high, warning of natural disaster risk level 3.

Previously, on the evening of October 20, Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Hoang Giang signed an urgent dispatch requesting coastal localities to urgently call on boats to take shelter before 3:00 p.m. on October 21, prohibiting them from going to sea until the weather stabilizes, and at the same time ensuring the safety of tourists in Ly Son.

The image of people swimming in the sea despite warnings as a storm approached is seen as a stern reminder of the habit of being complacent in the face of natural disasters, something that seems small but can cost lives.
