In Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, more than 50% of children in this age group are affected by refractive errors, of which myopia is the majority. Incorrect study habits and excessive use of electronic devices are the main causes.

The above information was given by Dr. Dinh Thi Phuong Thuy, ophthalmologist and Director of Dong Do Hospital, at the international conference on pediatric eye care recently held in Hanoi. The conference was attended by leading international and Vietnamese ophthalmology experts, who updated new advances in screening, care, and treatment of eye diseases in children.
According to Dr. Thuy, children can have many eye problems, from common refractive errors such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism to more complex diseases such as amblyopia (lazy eye), strabismus, congenital glaucoma. In particular, amblyopia accounts for about 1-5% of children under 6 years old.
Some cases also have the risk of conjunctivitis and nystagmus, which are conditions that cause the eyes to move uncontrollably, threatening vision if not intervened promptly. Dong Do Hospital and its partners will build a modern ophthalmology ecosystem, applying advanced ophthalmology techniques in Vietnam to help detect and intervene early for children with visual disorders.
