Percutaneous nephrolithotomy with laser is performed at Military Hospital 121 to help patients recover almost painlessly and quickly.
On December 24, Distinguished Physician, Colonel, Specialist Doctor 2 Nguyen Minh Thuan, Director of Military Hospital 121, said that the hospital's doctors had just performed percutaneous nephrolithotomy (mini PCNL) using laser for 4 patients with large kidney stones.
Doctors at Military Hospital 121 deploy percutaneous kidney stone removal technique
Previously, the Department of Urology at Military Hospital 121 received 4 cases of kidney stones causing water retention and pain to the patients; in which the largest stone was 50x30 mm in size.
After consulting with experts from higher-level hospitals in Ho Chi Minh City, doctors at Military Hospital 121 decided to perform percutaneous laser kidney stone removal surgery for all four patients. For each patient, after about 1 hour of surgery, the kidney stones were crushed by laser energy and removed through the tunnel with a skin incision of only about 1 cm.
Kidney before stone removal
According to specialist 2 Nguyen Minh Thuan, the technique of percutaneous nephrolithotomy with small tunnel laser has many outstanding advantages compared to the classical methods (open surgery), helping patients to have almost no pain, little bleeding; very small surgical scar, only 0.5-1 cm; short hospital stay, discharge after surgery from 3-5 days. Meanwhile, open surgery requires hospital stay from 7-10 days. In particular, this technique has little effect on kidney function and helps patients recover quickly.
Kidney after stones are removed
Laser lithotripsy is being successfully performed at the 121 Military Hospital. This method is highly effective in treating kidney stones, helping patients in the Mekong Delta feel secure in their treatment and avoid having to go to higher-level facilities.
