Báo Dân tríBáo Dân trí03/11/2024

(Dan Tri) - The ill-fated love story of Zhang and Wen is a hot topic in China. They met when they were both married and met in a chat group for parents.

After 5 years of illegal cohabitation and having a child together, Zhang and Wen recently decided to return to their hometown in Henan , China, to present themselves to the authorities, admit their illegal behavior, and accept punishment.

A local court has just announced the sentence for Zhang and Wen, each receiving four months in prison for living with another person as husband and wife, despite being married.

Zhang - the woman in this story - was given a six-month reprieve because she needed to care for her child with Wen. After Wen finished serving her sentence and stabilized her life for two months, Zhang will serve her prison sentence.

The story of Zhang and Wen is causing a stir in Chinese public opinion. Zhang and Wen originally lived in Henan Province, China. They met in a chat group for parents, and their two children were in the same class.

The homeroom teacher created this chat group so that parents could keep up to date with their children's homework. After interacting in the chat group, Zhang and Wen developed feelings for each other.

When she appeared before the authorities recently, Zhang said that her husband had often abused her both physically and mentally, and that her marriage was not happy. Knowing Wen made Zhang feel cared for and treated warmly. This was something Zhang had never received from her husband, her marriage was arranged by her family, and she married according to her parents' wishes.

In June 2019, after being severely abused by her husband, Zhang asked Wen to run away with her to Tianjin to start a new life and Wen agreed. At this time, Zhang had 4 children with her husband, Wen also had 2 children with his wife.

After leaving their families, Zhang and Wen lived together in Tianjin for nearly five years. When their child was about to be born, Zhang and Wen returned to their former partners to begin divorce proceedings. However, in May of this year, both returned to Henan to present themselves to the authorities, hoping to receive their punishment.

The reason is said to be because they encountered difficulties in the process of registering their marriage and household registration in Tianjin, when they already had a child together. It is likely that the authorities in Tianjin investigated the background of these two people, finding that they had signs of violating the law in the process of building their relationship.

In China, adultery while married is illegal, with a maximum penalty of two years in prison.

The sentences handed down to Zhang and Wen after they decided to turn themselves in were made public by the authorities. However, their full names were withheld to ensure their future lives would not be severely affected.

Many people sympathized with Zhang’s situation as she had been frequently abused by her ex-husband. However, having an extramarital affair, causing two families to break up and six children to be severely affected was a huge mistake.
