Leeds were beaten 2-1 by Man City in Sam Allardyce's first game in charge last weekend, playing at home for the first time under the former England boss. Allardyce's eight-month reign as Newcastle boss clearly left few fond memories for the Magpies' fans, who were vocal in their criticism of him before kick-off.
Newcastle not yet guaranteed a top 4 position
Leeds, in a relegation battle, got off to a flying start. Leeds captain Luke Ayling opened the scoring in the 7th minute in a thrilling encounter with Newcastle. Patrick Bamford missed a penalty that could have given Newcastle a 2-0 lead in the 28th minute, before Wilson converted to equalise three minutes later. However, the Eland Road side eventually earned a point thanks to Kristensen's equaliser in the 69th minute.
After the goal brought Leeds 1 point, the home team ended the match playing with one less man as defender Junior Firpo was sent off for receiving 2 yellow cards in the second half's injury time.
Leeds still trying to stay in the league
With a point from this game, Leeds moved up one place to 18th and are now one point from safety. Sam Allardyce's side travel to West Ham next weekend before hosting Tottenham in their final game of the season. Leeds, winless in seven games, face another tough survival battle after surviving relegation at the end of last season.
For Newcastle, their bid to qualify for the Champions League through a top-four finish is also on the wane. Eddie Howe's side are still third but are just three points ahead of fourth-placed Manchester United and four ahead of fifth-placed Liverpool. The Magpies have played one game more than Manchester United. Newcastle need six points from their final three games against Brighton, Leicester and Chelsea to secure a top-four finish.
