Ministry of Education and Training announces correlation between academic records and graduation exam scores: Surprise in math

(Dan Tri) - The Ministry of Education and Training has just announced a correlation table between graduation exam scores and average scores of these subjects at high school level.

Data from the correlation table of academic records - exam scores published by the Ministry of Education and Training , it is easy to see that all exam subjects have a positive correlation coefficient with academic records. However, no exam subject has a strong enough correlation coefficient (>0.7), most of them are only at an average level, except for math.

Accordingly, the average score in math for high school graduation is 4.78. Meanwhile, the average score in math for grade 10 is 6.7, 6.89 for grade 11 and 7.51 for grade 12. The correlation coefficients are 0.67-0.68-0.63 respectively.

The lowest correlation coefficient in grade 12 shows that the academic score is somewhat "virtual" when the average academic score of students nationwide is very high but the average graduation exam score is very low (<5).

However, mathematics is still the only subject with a correlation coefficient greater than 0.6. All other subjects are below this level. There are some subjects with very low correlation coefficients compared to the school report card, including technology - industry, technology - agriculture , history and geography.

Also according to this correlation table, the standard deviation and median absolute deviation of high school graduation exam scores are significantly larger than those of academic transcript scores.

For example, the math graduation exam score has a standard deviation of 1.68, the median absolute deviation is 1.35, but the numbers in the 12th grade report card score are 0.45 and 0.38, respectively.

The larger the standard deviation value, the higher the differentiation in the math graduation exam scores with a tendency to disperse in two directions, the larger the difference in scores between candidates.

Meanwhile, the report card scores have a very small standard deviation, showing "clustering" and no differentiation. In other words, the report card scores do not show the difference in ability between groups of students from good, average to weak in math.

Notably, although the standard deviation of math scores is low, the index of this subject is still higher than the remaining subjects.

Literature is the subject with the lowest differentiation in both the graduation exam and the high school report card results. The standard deviation of the report card scores is only 0.31-0.36, which is poor differentiation.

The large gap in the level of differentiation between the transcript scores and the graduation exam scores in the correlation table published by the Ministry of Education and Training raises questions about the uniformity in assessment standards between high schools and the national graduation exam. At the same time, the above figures also raise issues about the legitimacy and fairness of using transcript results in university admissions.
