Ministry of Education and Training abandons proposal to draw lots for third subject in 10th grade entrance exam

This morning (October 19), the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) has just announced the draft Circular promulgating the Regulations on Secondary School and High School Admissions. Accordingly, the MOET has abandoned the proposal to draw lots for the third subject in the 10th grade entrance exam, and at the same time allows localities to decide for themselves.

To provide localities with a basis for preparing for the exams, the Ministry of Education and Training has issued a draft Regulation on junior high school and high school entrance exams, and will begin collecting public opinions from now until December 18.

For admission to grade 10 high school, the draft regulation stipulates that it can be organized in three forms: selection, exam, and a combination of selection and exam.

Specifically, for the admission method, the basis is the training results and learning results of the years of the general education program at the junior high school level or the regular education program at the junior high school level of the admission subject.

With the entrance exam method, the number of subjects is 3 with math, literature and 1 third subject or a combined exam. The Departments of Education and Training can choose 1 of 2 options and it will be announced before March 31st every year.

Accordingly, if the third subject is chosen, it is selected from among the subjects that are assessed by scores in the general education program at the secondary level. The choice of the third subject has changed over the years to achieve the goal of comprehensive education in the basic education stage.

If you choose to take a combined exam of subjects selected from among the subjects assessed by scores in the secondary school general education program.

Regarding the exam duration of each subject, literature is 120 minutes, math is 90 or 120 minutes, the third subject is 60 or 90 minutes, and the combined exam is 90 or 120 minutes.

The exam content is within the secondary school education program, mainly grade 9 program.

According to statistics as of October 7, 60/63 Departments of Education and Training agreed with the plan of 3 entrance exams for grade 10 high school and said that this is suitable for reality and reduces pressure.

It is expected that the Circular on Junior High School and High School Admission Regulations will be completed and issued before December 31, 2024.
