In the final of the men's 1,500m freestyle, Nguyen Huy Hoang competed with 7 opponents including Ilya Sibirtsev (Uzbekistan), Kushagra Rawat (India), Hinata Ando (Japan), Yi Shun-wang (Hong Kong), Lev Cherepanov (Kazakhstan), Ratth Thammananthachote (Thailand) and Bin Muhammad Dhuha (Malaysia).
With an impressive performance, the "Gianh River otter" Nguyen Huy Hoang excelled over his opponents, finishing first with a time of 15 minutes 15 seconds 01 to rise to the highest position to win the gold medal. This is also the first gold medal of this 25-year-old swimmer at the Asian Swimming Championship. The silver medalist was Ilya Sibirtsev (Uzbekistan) with a time of 15 minutes 23 seconds 35, while Kushagra Rawat (India) won the bronze medal with 15 minutes 30 seconds 88.
Previously, also in this specialty, Nguyen Huy Hoang's best achievement at the continental level was the silver medal at the 2018 ASIAD in Indonesia.
Huy Hoang created a historic milestone for Vietnamese Swimming at the Asian tournament.
It is worth mentioning that the parameter of 15 minutes 15 seconds 01 is Nguyen Huy Hoang's best achievement in the past year. At the 2024 Paris Olympics, Nguyen Huy Hoang achieved a time of 15 minutes 18 seconds 63, while his achievement at the 2025 World Championship was 15 minutes 19 seconds 39.
In addition to the historic gold medal, on the same day of competition, Huy Hoang's teammate, swimmer Tran Hung Nguyen, also competed impressively, winning a silver medal in the men's 400m individual medley with a time of 4 minutes 20 seconds 30.
In the men's 4×200m freestyle relay, the Vietnamese team including Tran Van Nguyen Quoc, Nguyen Huy Hoang, Nguyen Quang Thuan and Tran Hung Nguyen ranked 7th with a time of 7 minutes 38 seconds 18.
According to the coaching board of the Vietnamese Swimming team who are in India to participate in the Asian Championship, on the first day of competition, the Vietnamese Swimming team won 2 silver medals thanks to the efforts of the swimmers: Vo Thi My Tien - women's 200m freestyle with a time of 2 minutes 01 seconds 95; Nguyen Kha Nhi - women's 1,500m freestyle with a time of 17 minutes 23 seconds 60. In addition, the Vietnamese Swimming team also won 1 bronze medal thanks to Thanh Bao - men's 200m breaststroke with a time of 2 minutes 12 seconds 50.
The 2025 Asian Swimming Championship takes place from September 28 to October 10 in India. The Vietnamese Swimming team will participate with 12 members, including 9 athletes: Nguyen Huy Hoang, Tran Hung Nguyen, Pham Thanh Bao, Nguyen Quang Thuan, Vo Thi My Tien, Nguyen Kha Nhi, Nguyen Thuy Hien, Duong Van Hoang Quy, Tran Van Nguyen Quoc.
The first gold medal at the 2025 Asian Championships by Huy Hoang is not only a personal milestone but also a historical mark for Vietnamese Swimming in the continental arena. Huy Hoang's breakthrough to overcome strong opponents from Japan, Uzbekistan, India... has proven his outstanding efforts in technique, tactics and competitive mentality; at the same time, this result gives young Vietnamese athletes more confidence that they can completely conquer the peak in international arenas.
