According to European press, Jota died in a traffic accident in Zamora (Spain). The incident happened at 0:30 (local time) on the A52 highway.

At the time of the incident, Jota’s younger brother, Andre, who is also a professional footballer, was in the car. According to witnesses, Jota’s Lamborghini lost control and ran off the road before bursting into flames. The victims in the car did not survive.

Liverpool FC posted their condolences on the tragic passing of Diogo Jota. They also asked for privacy for Diogo Jota's family and friends. They promised to continue to support them to the best of their ability for the player's family.

Jota's former club Porto also wrote: "We are deeply shocked and saddened and send our sincerest condolences to the family and friends of Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva - who was also our youth player. May they rest in peace."

In the Portuguese national team, he has 49 appearances and scored 14 goals. Jota also won the UEFA Nations Cup twice with Cristiano Ronaldo in the 2018-2019 and 2024-2025 seasons.
