Mrs. Irene Edge (left) is 96 years old this year. |
In late September, Edge completed a 5km race in 1 hour and 20 minutes, a time that organizers rated a world record for her age, based on the World Masters Athletics ranking system.
Mrs Edge, who lives near Halesowen in the West of England, was encouraged to take part in the event by her two daughters, Jacqui Burt and Angela Podmore.
After completing the race, she said excitedly: “I loved every minute of it. I want to do more and am planning another race in Evesham.”
“I didn’t know what to expect as it was my first time, but everything was great. Everyone was so friendly and the atmosphere was great,” she added.
Ms Edge also expressed surprise at the completion time: “I didn't think I could run in such a short time, only 1 hour 20 minutes.”
This is an amazing result, showing the extraordinary strength and will of the 96-year-old woman. What is special about Mrs. Edge is her healthy lifestyle that helps her maintain her fitness at nearly 100 years old.
“I have never driven a car, so I walk a lot, even when I go shopping,” she says. “I look after myself by eating well: a full breakfast, a light lunch and a cooked meal or salad for dinner. I don’t smoke and I don’t drink alcohol.”
BBC said that Irene Edge's achievement is not only a record but also a great inspiration to the community. At the age of 96, she has proven that there are no limits to the pursuit of health and happiness.
With her optimistic spirit and healthy lifestyle, Edge not only broke records but also inspired those around her about the meaning of living positively.
