Vietnamese universities lead in international publications: Which school will increase the most in the first half of 2025?

In recent years, higher education institutions in Vietnam have continuously improved their scientific research capacity, demonstrated by a significant increase in the number of international publications and remarkable progress on prestigious global rankings.

The Ministry of Education and Training has just announced information on the number of international publications of Vietnamese higher education with many impressive numbers.

Scientific publications in the WoS/Scopus index are increasing

The Ministry of Education and Training said that in recent years, universities in Vietnam have focused on developing research capacity, affirming their core role in the national science and technology system.

According to the latest assessment from Web of Science (WoS), Vietnamese higher education institutions continue to make a strong mark on the world science map with an increasing number of international publications, many schools breaking through in the rankings of SARAP 2025-0.5.

The number of scientific articles published in prestigious systems such as WoS (Web of Science) and Scopus is constantly increasing, with about 85% of publications coming from higher education institutions.

Thanks to these research achievements, more and more Vietnamese universities have appeared in prestigious international rankings.

Many research products have been transferred, commercialized and effectively applied in practice, contributing to training high-quality human resources to serve the country's socio-economic development.

Top 10 leading higher education institutions in international publications

According to the SARAP 2025-0.5 ranking recently published by Web of Science, the top 10 Vietnamese universities in terms of research article achievements in the first half of 2025 have changed a lot compared to the same period in 2024.

Ho Chi Minh City National University maintained its leading position with 850 WoS articles, accounting for 13.18% of the total number of articles nationwide.

Hanoi National University ranked second with 510 articles, accounting for 7.91%.

Hanoi University of Science and Technology ranked third with 373 articles, accounting for 5.79%.

The next positions in the top 10 are: Duy Tan University, Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Can Tho University, Hue University, Phenikaa University, Ton Duc Thang University, Van Lang University and Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics.

Notably, among the 10 high-ranking units, the majority of universities and schools have significantly increased WoS research article achievements compared to the same period:

• Ho Chi Minh City National University increased 202 posts;

• Hanoi National University increased 105 posts;

• Hanoi University of Science and Technology and Hue University both increased 68 posts;

• Can Tho University increased 54 posts;

• Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy increased 86 posts;

• Phenikaa University increased by 72 articles;

• Dong Nai University of Technology's achievements have more than doubled compared to the same period.

In total, the 11 universities in the top 10 accounted for 47.49% of the country's total research articles.

Many universities are growing strongly.

Vietnam currently has 264 higher education institutions, of which 68 are listed in the SARAP 2025-0.5 rankings, divided into 53 ranks (some schools are in the same rank).

The next universities to make it into the SARAP research article output rankings in the first half of 2025 include:

• Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry;

• Hanoi Medical University;

• Nguyen Tat Thanh University;

• Danang University;

• Ho Chi Minh City University of Technical Education;

• Thai Nguyen University;

• FPT University;

• National Economics University;

• Hanoi University of Industry;

• Le Quy Don University of Technology;

• Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology;

Top 30 has many notable names such as :

• Vietnam Academy of Agriculture;

• Ho Chi Minh City Open University;

• VinUni University;

• Hanoi National University of Education;

• Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry and Trade;

• Ho Chi Minh City University of Agriculture and Forestry;

• University of Water Resources;

• Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy;

• Vinh University;

• Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine;

• Hanoi University of Science and Technology.
