Cai Mep - Can Gio has the potential to become the world's leading port cluster

Chairman of Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee Nguyen Van Duoc believes that Cai Mep - Can Gio seaport area will become one of the strong seaport centers of Vietnam and the world.

On the morning of September 20, Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee Nguyen Van Duoc led a working delegation to survey the Cai Mep - Thi Vai port cluster and Can Gio port.

Accompanying were Vice Chairmen of Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee Nguyen Van Tho, Nguyen Manh Cuong and leaders of relevant departments, branches and localities.

The working group from Bach Dang wharf followed the Saigon River to the estuary area to conduct field surveys, learn about and research the planning of Cai Mep - Thi Vai seaport cluster, Can Gio seaport, connecting traffic routes, free trade zones, logistics...

The delegation listened to the leaders of the Department of Construction inform about seaport infrastructure projects, especially in the context of Ho Chi Minh City's recent expansion of its boundaries. In which, Cai Mep - Can Gio port cluster and the transport infrastructure system were merged into Ho Chi Minh City.

The survey team also directly visited Gemalink port (Cai Mep - Thi Vai port cluster) to grasp the actual operation situation of the port.

Reporting to the working delegation, Mr. Cao Hong Phong, Deputy Director of Gemalink Port, said that the unit is one of 19 ports in the world capable of receiving container ships with a capacity of up to 250,000 DWT (equivalent to 24,000 Teus).

In 2024, Gemalink port phase 1 received 525 ships with an output of 1.75 million Teus and is expected to reach nearly 2 million Teus in 2025.

According to the new planning that the Vietnam Maritime Administration and the Ministry of Construction are proposing to adjust, the Cai Mep Ha wharf area will increase the wharf length from 510m to 900m.

This will ensure the simultaneous reception of two 250,000DWT ships, allowing Gemalink wharf to be extended by about 390m downstream, connecting with Cai Mep Ha port route.

The connection of the SSIT - Gemalink - Cai Mep Ha port wharf lines creates a continuous wharf line, with a length of 3.5km in the 2030 period.

If calculated from CMIT, TCTT to Cai Mep Ha is 11km, convenient for coordinated exploitation, increasing the capacity to receive ships and goods, and optimally exploiting the sea wharf route.

"With the above planning, the entire area from the existing CMIT port to the downstream Cai Mep Ha port will have a wharf line of about 22km, larger than the scale of Singapore port. At that time, the Cai Mep area will have an advantage in terms of wharf line length and ship size that no other country in the world has," said Mr. Phong.

At the survey, Chairman of Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee Nguyen Van Duoc acknowledged the impressive results of Gemalink port in recent times, especially the green shift.

Ho Chi Minh City has three new planning directions. In which, Ho Chi Minh City area plays the role of financial, high-tech and trade-service center; Binh Duong area is the high-tech industrial center; and Ba Ria - Vung Tau is the marine economic zone, responsible for seaport services, logistics, along with developing tourism and marine entertainment.

Chairman of the City People's Committee Nguyen Van Duoc assessed the role of the marine economy as extremely important in the upcoming development of Ho Chi Minh City and makes an important contribution to the growth of the land in the period 2026-2030 and the following years.

"Through today's survey, I see that the potential of Cai Mep - Can Gio port area is huge.

With the highest political determination of Ho Chi Minh City, concentrating resources and calling for investors, I believe that Cai Mep - Can Gio seaport cluster will become one of the strong seaport centers of Vietnam and the world," Chairman of Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee Nguyen Van Duoc commented.
