Cambodia strengthens security to deal with anti-government protests

More than 1,000 Cambodian security personnel were deployed in the capital Phnom Penh on August 17 to deal with plans for anti -government protests called by overseas opposition groups.

Lieutenant General Chuon Narin, Phnom Penh Police Chief and Deputy National Police Chief, affirmed that security forces “are ready to crack down on any extremist groups that try to organize illegal protests on August 18 or the following days.”

He also called on people not to worry about public order and safety, saying normal movement in the capital was still guaranteed.

Previously, on August 15, Prime Minister Hun Manet warned that the opposition abroad was calling on people to gather in Phnom Penh on August 18 to protest the Cambodia-Laos-Vietnam Development Triangle Area initiative.

According to him, this is a plot to overthrow the legitimate government of Cambodia. Prime Minister Hun Manet declared that he would take “firm action against those who try to sabotage the country” and affirmed that “we will not allow the plot by a small number of hostile forces to divide the country”.

The Development Triangle Initiative aims to promote growth and stability in the border areas between Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam.

The initiative to establish the Development Triangle was proposed by Prime Minister of the Royal Government of Cambodia Hun Sen at the first summit meeting of the three Prime Ministers of Cambodia - Laos - Vietnam in Vientiane, Laos in 1999.

The Cambodia-Laos-Vietnam Development Triangle is a border area of ​​three countries Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. The scope of this Development Triangle includes 13 provinces, namely Ratanakiri, Stung Treng, Mondulkiri and Kratié in Eastern Cambodia, Attapu, Salavan, Sekong and Champasak in Southern Laos and Kon Tum , Gia Lai, Dak Lak, Dak Nong and Binh Phuoc in the Central Highlands of Vietnam.
