The old Hung Lo commune, now part of Van Phu ward, is located along the Lo river. With its riverside location and large water surface area, cage fish farming here once flourished, but is now stagnating.

Mr. Le Huy Ha - Vice Chairman of Van Phu Ward People's Committee said: At its peak, the old Hung Lo commune had more than 40 fish cages, annually selling dozens of tons of catfish, tilapia, red tilapia, catfish... to the market, contributing to increasing income and creating jobs for dozens of households.

Hung Lo cage fish brand has had a long-standing reputation in the market, because the fish are raised with clean water, delicious and reasonably priced. The products are exported to many provinces and cities across the country, trusted by consumers.

However, up to this point, there are only 2 households left in the area. Explaining why the number of fish farming households has decreased, Mr. La Tien Boong - a long-time fish cage farmer said: The 2024 Yagi storm was too devastating, especially the strong flood on the Lo River, which caused a series of fish cages to break their anchors, drift away or be damaged; many cages were "empty" of fish after the storm. In addition, the river water flowed strongly and was turbid, so many fish died this time, causing heavy losses to the farming households.

Currently, many fish cages are still abandoned, rusted and unable to be restored or repaired.

Sighing with concerns about the profession, Mr. Boong added: There are households that have not "recovered" economically for nearly a year now, because all their savings have been invested in fish cages. The old Hung Lo has good conditions for developing fish cages as the river is not too deep, the water is clean and convenient for trade; many households have experience in fish farming so they really want to re-cage. However, the damage is so severe that many households are still hesitant about the idea of ​​re-cage. Natural disasters, weather and "lessons" from the floods in 2024 are barriers to the fish cage farming profession in Hung Lo at present.

Many floating houses for keeping fish cages, fishing gear... are stranded, abandoned and have no one to look after or repair them, causing waste.

According to Mr. Boong, if the fish cage farming in Hung Lo is favorable, it will be quite profitable, and there is no need to worry about the output because it has a brand. If it develops well, the area can raise up to 100-120 cages while still ensuring water source, area and no pollution. However, the old farming households are not enthusiastic about re-raising cages if there is no mechanism to "stimulate" the profession and favorable weather and hydrology...

What are the opportunities for developing cage fish farming in Van Phu in the coming time is the question of many households and needs an answer.

However, through understanding the situation, we see that most households have quit the profession or are still worried about the complicated weather developments in recent years, especially unpredictable storms. Therefore, re-caging is facing many difficulties.

It can be seen that the cage fish farming profession in the old Hung Lo commune has a lot of potential, but is currently stagnant. The conversion of the model of raising river fish in ponds, training in science and technology, proactive ways to prevent storms and floods, and sharing farming experiences when the weather changes abnormally... need to be strongly communicated to households so that the profession can develop more and more, contributing to the development of the local economy.
