Warning students not to play 'hermit crab'

After students bought hermit crabs sold around the school and brought them into class to play with, injuring their hands, the school and the Department of Education in Da Nang requested information and warned them not to play.

Speaking to Tuoi Tre Online on October 25, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Lich, head of the Department of Education and Training of Lien Chieu District ( Da Nang City), said he had asked schools in the area to grasp and report cases of students buying a "strange snail" called a hermit crab to play with and then getting into trouble.

"I called the ward leaders and schools to coordinate propaganda and general warnings," Mr. Lich said.

Earlier, during recess, a student at NVT Primary School in Lien Chieu District suddenly cried out because a snail called the “hermit snail” was stuck to the tip of his finger. Teachers and medical staff had to intervene.

After several minutes of trying to separate the screw with scissors, the student was able to remove it from his finger. At this point, the part of the finger that was stabbed by the creature showed signs of swelling and damage.

This student said he saw his friends buying "hermit crabs" to play with, so he went to the bookstore to buy one. While he was playing with it, the creature inside the shell clamped tightly onto his hand.

After the incident, the school where the students studied asked teachers to send messages to parents to warn them and remind their children not to buy this creature to play with.

On the afternoon of October 25, when going to a bookstore in Lien Chieu district, the reporter easily bought the creature that a student had injured while playing with earlier.

"This snail is sold a lot in Ho Chi Minh City but not much in Da Nang. I went to the beach to look for it but couldn't find it. Feeling happy, I ordered it and brought it home to raise in a sand tank.

Because my house is near the school, students come by every day to buy things. Seeing the funny-looking snails, some students were curious and asked to buy them, so I sold them for 20,000 VND each.

A few days ago I sold to students, but now if any child wants to buy, they must have their parents bring them. If they agree to buy, then I will sell" - said the owner of a bookstore in Lien Chieu.
