On the evening of September 26, FIFA officially announced that it had accused the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) of cheating and forging documents to naturalize 7 foreign players, including them in the registration list for the match against Vietnam in the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers, which took place in June.

This is considered a scandal that has shaken the football world in the region. Over the years, there have been many cases of national teams and football federations using illegal players, but systematic cheating like in Malaysia is extremely rare.

Immediately after FIFA's announcement, Malaysia's New Straits Times contacted FAM to discuss the incident.

Mr. Datuk Yusoff Mahadi, acting President of FAM, gave a short answer: "Let's wait until tomorrow (September 27)".

This is an understandable move by Mr. Mahadi, who is currently acting chairman of the Malaysian football governing body.

The person most responsible for this scandal is likely former president Datuk Joehari, who resigned in August.

Mr. Joehari was elected as chairman on February 15, 2025. He previously served as vice chairman since 2017.

Meanwhile, Mr. Mahadi is the most senior vice president of FAM, so he was appointed as acting president. It is not excluded that Mr. Mahadi is also implicated in this scandal.
