Storm No. 3's circulation and rising water levels on the Bui River caused severe flooding in the fields of My Luong Commune (Chuong My District, Hanoi). |
Due to the low-lying terrain and the location along the Bui River, many areas in Chuong My district have slow floodwaters receding, averaging only about 10 cm per day, and the entire rice fields are still submerged in water. |
By September 23, the water had receded about one meter from its peak. People waded through water almost up to their waists to go to the fields to harvest young rice to minimize damage. |
Water has submerged the fields of Khôn Duy village, Mỹ Lương commune for the past two weeks. Many locals say that since 1971, this is the second time the Bui river has risen this high. |
Talking to Tien Phong newspaper reporter, Lieutenant Colonel Dang Dinh Thinh, Deputy Political Commissar of Regiment 64/Division 361/Air Defense - Air Force stationed in Dong Son commune, Chuong My district, said: "Carrying out the task of coordinating with the military command of Chuong My district to overcome storm No. 3, Regiment 64 sent 50 officers and soldiers to the commune to help people harvest rice." |
Despite the rainy weather, many rice fields were flooded more than 1 meter deep, but soldiers of Regiment 64/Division 361/Air Defense - Air Force still helped people harvest rice. |
"The flooded fields forced my family to harvest the young rice to salvage what little we could. With the support of the soldiers, we will try our best to finish today. If we wait any longer, we will lose everything," said Mr. Tam Thieu. |
"My family has a total of 1 hectare of rice field but there are only two grandparents. My grandmother is often sick and the children are married far away. Luckily, we received help from soldiers to get rice," Mr. Thieu added. |
Even though the yield is low, we still have to harvest, otherwise the rice seeds will germinate. |
Taking advantage of the recent rain break, people hurried back to the fields to harvest and move the young rice they had just scooped up to the shore. After being flooded for more than ten days and being harvested young, the rice could only be used as animal feed. |
