Chinese government bans employees from using iPhones

VTC NewsVTC News07/09/2023

The move by the Chinese government is aimed at promoting self-sufficiency in technology and reducing dependence on foreign suppliers. Under the new policy, government employees are banned from using devices such as iPhones for work purposes or even bringing them into office buildings. The government cited cybersecurity concerns as the reason.

“In recent weeks, officials have been instructed by superiors not to use the devices on workplace communications channels as part of Beijing’s ongoing efforts to reduce its reliance on foreign technology, strengthen cybersecurity and limit the flow of sensitive data across China’s borders,” the Wall Street Journal reported.

Apple has enjoyed considerable success in the Chinese smartphone market as rival Huawei has struggled to keep up following the impact of US 5G sanctions. However, Apple’s stronghold in China could now be under threat following the new ban, which could fuel speculation of espionage or interference by the company.

On the other hand, in July, Apple announced the launch of an online store on WeChat, China's popular messaging app. This program allows app users to buy a full range of Apple products.

This is not the first time foreign-branded products have been banned in China. In 2014, Apple products were banned from some government buildings due to security concerns. That same year, Windows 8 was also banned from government PCs.

The ban comes amid growing tensions between China and Western countries like the US, which has imposed a number of trade and technology sanctions on Beijing. Microsoft recently reported that Chinese hackers had accessed government email accounts in the US and Europe, accusing the hackers of being sponsored by the Chinese government.
