On the morning of September 23 local time, at the United Nations headquarters in New York, USA, the High-Level Debate of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly opened with the theme "Better Together: 80 Years and Beyond for Peace , Development and Human Rights."
According to a special correspondent of VNA, the meeting was attended by nearly 150 heads of state, heads of government and senior representatives of many member countries, along with many leaders of international and regional organizations.
President Luong Cuong led a high-ranking Vietnamese delegation to attend the meeting.
Reporting on the world situation and the activities of the United Nations, Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said the world is moving towards a multipolar world and needs an effective multilateral system to avoid repeating the lessons that led to World War I.
Mr. Guterres emphasized that the United Nations is a moral compass, a force for maintaining peace, protecting international law, promoting sustainable development, ensuring human rights, and turning global decisions into concrete actions.
The Secretary-General stressed that in the current context, the international community needs to make five right choices.
First, peace must be based on international law.
Second, is to ensure human rights and dignity by implementing international commitments on human rights, including through increased resource mobilization and reform of the international financial system to further implement the Sustainable Development Goals.
Third, is to promote climate justice and climate action, through sustainable and equitable energy transitions and ensuring resources for green climate through financial mechanisms and policies.
Fourth, use and exploit advanced technology and artificial intelligence to serve the development of the world and humanity.
Fifth, we need to build a more inclusive, transparent and 21st-century-ready United Nations, including through the UN80 Reform Initiative, revising the 2026 budget to strengthen accountability, improve delivery and cut costs.
President of the 80th United Nations General Assembly Annalena Baerbok highlighted the achievements the United Nations has made in supporting the international community over the past 80 years.
Ms. Baerbok reaffirmed the importance of the United Nations in the international multilateral system and stressed that the strength of the United Nations Charter depends on the adherence of Member States to the Charter. Emphasizing gender equality, Ms. Baerbok called for the early appointment of a female Secretary-General.
Speaking immediately after the opening session, Brazilian President Lula da Silva said the international community needs to rearrange its priorities, including reducing military budgets and increasing financial resources for sustainable development.
For his part, US President Donald Trump said that the United Nations is an organization with great potential, but there are still many problems that need to be solved. For the United States, President Trump affirmed that it has achieved many achievements in domestic and foreign affairs, including helping to end 7 conflicts in the world, reaching tariff agreements with many countries, including Vietnam; at the same time, emphasizing the need to end the conflict in Gaza.
Meanwhile, many senior leaders of countries said that the world is facing unprecedented challenges, expressing strong support for the central role of the United Nations in the multilateral system, upholding international law, reforming the United Nations to respond to unprecedented challenges, strengthening international cooperation, mobilizing financial resources, especially green finance, and cooperating and sharing scientific and technological advances./.
