On September 21, President Luong Cuong and his wife led a high-ranking Vietnamese delegation leaving Hanoi for the United States to attend the high-level general debate of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly.
This is the highest-ranking Vietnamese leader's visit to the US on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of normalization of relations between the two countries.
Affirming multilateralism
This working trip of President Luong Cuong has special significance as both the United Nations and Vietnam are celebrating their 80th anniversary - the United Nations celebrated its 80th anniversary, and Vietnam celebrated its 80th National Day (on September 2). This participation affirms Vietnam's strong commitment to multilateralism and the core values of the United Nations.
During a meeting with Ms. Pauline Tamesis, United Nations Resident Coordinator, and heads of UN organizations in Vietnam on September 18, President Luong Cuong said that both the United Nations and Vietnam are making efforts to reform in the direction of increasing effectiveness and efficiency, adapting to the requirements of the times.
Speaking about the message at the high-level general discussion scheduled to start on September 23 (US time), the President shared that his speech will tell the "story of Vietnam" that has overcome difficulties, healed the wounds of war, transformed and risen strongly, and deeply integrated into the world. With what has been experienced, Vietnam calls on countries to honor the value of peace and make strong changes to create a sustainable future.
In New York, the headquarters of the United Nations, the President will attend a high-level meeting to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the organization's founding, deliver keynote speeches at a high-level general debate and a special global event on climate action.
Promoting Vietnam - US cooperation
According to Deputy Foreign Minister Dang Hoang Giang, the two sides are continuing to make efforts to promote economic, trade and investment relations to develop effectively and sustainably, and to properly handle the issue of reciprocal taxes. The US is currently Vietnam's largest export market. In the political field, bilateral relations continue to be promoted with at least four phone calls between the two countries' leaders from September 2024 to present.
During his stay in the US, the President will meet with US leaders; receive businesses, financial institutions, long-time friends and partners, and leading scholars. These activities aim to affirm the policy of attaching importance to developing relations with the US, especially in economics, trade, investment, science and technology, while promoting the implementation of agreements and commitments between the two countries' senior leaders.
Sharing with VNA, Mr. Gary Thanh Nguyen, Chairman of the Washington Metropolitan Area Vietnamese Entrepreneurs and Patriots Club, has high expectations for this working trip. He hopes that the trip will strongly promote economic, trade, investment, science and technology cooperation between Vietnam and the US - key areas that can help Vietnam make a breakthrough in the new development stage.
Mr. Gary Thanh Nguyen also hopes that cooperation in education and training, healthcare, renewable energy and climate change will receive more attention as these are all areas directly related to people's lives now and in the future.
Believing that the working trip will be successful in both multilateral and bilateral aspects, Deputy Minister Dang Hoang Giang hopes that the working trip will leave a good impression on the role, position, and positive and substantial contributions of Vietnam in solving global issues as well as promoting Vietnam's relations with the US and other countries.
