UN Relief Program may stop operations in Gaza Strip

UNRWA is at risk of ceasing operations due to fuel shortages, said Philippe Lazzarini, head of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA).

UNRWA has repeatedly requested access to fuel in recent weeks, but this request has not been resolved. According to Philippe Lazzarini, due to the lack of fuel, UNRWA will not be able to send trucks through the southern part of the Gaza Strip to deliver relief supplies.

More than 60 UNRWA facilities in Palestine were attacked, most of them in southern Gaza. UNRWA was established in 1949 to provide humanitarian aid and protection to Palestinian refugees pending a just and lasting solution to their plight. UNRWA operates in Gaza, the West Bank, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria.

In a related development, Paltel and Jawwal - the two largest telecommunications service providers in the Gaza Strip - announced that all telecommunications services in the densely populated area had stopped working, as all energy sources had been exhausted.

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) estimates that only 10% of the food supplies needed have been brought into the Gaza Strip since the conflict began. The region is facing severe food shortages and widespread famine, with nearly all of its population in dire need of assistance.

The fuel shortage has also paralyzed distribution and humanitarian operations, including the delivery of food assistance, according to WFP. Even when trucks arrive from Egypt and unload supplies in the Gaza Strip, WFP is unable to reach civilians in shelters because there is not enough fuel for the distribution vehicles.
