The girl who graduated with honors from the University of Transport lost 6 kg because of studying.

Ngo Thi Hang, the winner of 14 scholarships and a series of awards in the fields of Logistics and startups, once lost 6 kg after one semester due to hard studying.

Hang, 22 years old, from Thanh Hoa, graduated from the Logistics Management major of the University of Transport with 3.79/4 points, is one of two representatives of the school honored by Hanoi as the valedictorian of the year 2023.

Hang’s long list of achievements during her four years at university includes 14 scholarships, including a 7-semester study encouragement scholarship at school and scholarships from businesses. In addition, Hang won many awards from competitions organized by ministries, branches, and embassies, related to the field of study she pursued.

"I didn't think I would be lucky enough to receive so many scholarships and awards, including the title of valedictorian. It's a bit of luck, a mark of my student days," Hang said.

Hang took the university entrance exam in 2019. About a year before, Hang had intended to take the Math, Chemistry, and Biology exams with the goal of entering Hanoi Medical University. But when she shared her plan, many people advised her to reconsider because "it's hard for girls to study this major." At the same time, Hang happened to watch the Shark Tank program, was impressed by the fundraising performance of a Logistics startup, so she learned about this industry.

The initial keywords related to Logistics that she collected were transportation, logistics, import-export, English, communication skills and creativity. Finding it suitable, Hang decided to change direction, taking the combination of Math, Chemistry and English.

With more than 24 points, Hang had about 4 points more than enough to be admitted to the Logistics Management major at the University of Transport. The female student began her new journey with lessons that covered entire chapters of about 20-30 pages. Still maintaining the habit of paying attention in lectures and reviewing lessons at home like in high school, Hang achieved high scores in each subject.

Besides tutoring to make ends meet, Hang devoted all her remaining time to studying. The way she studied remained the same, but the amount of knowledge increased many times, making Hang exhausted, sometimes she could only sleep for 2-3 hours. The peak was in the first semester of her second year, when Hang dropped from 52kg to 46kg.

"At that time, I didn't know how to study effectively and didn't know how to allocate time. I spent too much time on subjects that required a lot of memorization," Hang said.

From the second semester of her second year, Hang built a more reasonable study plan for each subject. In addition to self-study, Hang studied with a group of close friends, finding ways to solve difficult exercises, and focused on reviewing each topic to test each other.

The last two years also have more specialized subjects. Thanks to her previous English foundation, Hang had no difficulty reading documents and learning new knowledge.

In addition to studying, the female student participates in scientific research and joins the school's Logistics club to learn more. From here, Hang began to register to participate in many competitions from school level to national scale such as Vietnam Logistics Young Talent.

Hang and her group of friends also participated in some startup competitions with the product being a software in the education field. Most of the time, Hang won the competition.

Thanks to her academic achievements, the Thanh Hoa girl won 14 scholarships inside and outside the school. Hang was most impressed with the Deloitte Group's Lighting Up the Future scholarship. After going through the application and interview rounds, Hang was one of 200 students nationwide and the only student from the University of Transport to be awarded this scholarship.

Hang estimates that she has saved hundreds of millions from the scholarship. Along with her tutoring job, the scholarship has helped Hang not have to ask for financial support from her family since her second year. In addition, Hang has the opportunity to meet businesses and friends from other schools and be inspired by them.

"When I attended a live training session within the framework of the Deloitte scholarship, a woman shared with me that we should not look at things with too negative or too rosy eyes. I have always kept that advice in mind," Hang shared.

Having also applied for and failed a big scholarship from a company, Hang learned the lesson of moderation during interviews and avoiding overconfidence.

Vu Thi Hoa, a second-year student and member of the Logistics Club at the University of Transport, said Hang's story of "hunting" for scholarships and awards was famous in the department. Hoa herself was also impressed when she approached Hang to ask for her experience.

"She was very enthusiastic in supporting us and introducing teachers to guide us. The whole club often teased us about having to cast a statue of Hang," Hoa shared.

Hang is currently studying Chinese with the goal of winning a scholarship to study abroad for a master's degree in the next two years. Hang believes that China has strengths in Logistics, which is a good environment to learn many new things. In addition, Hang continues to develop her Tiktok channel about books. This channel currently has nearly 20,000 followers. In the future, Hang hopes to become a lecturer.

Remembering that her family was on the list of poor or near-poor households for many years, Hoa is grateful that her parents always tried to ensure their children's education.

"That is the motivation for me to strive to achieve my goal. I am not afraid of anything and never give up because I have nothing to lose," Hang said.
