Literature score exceeded expectations

After the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City officially announced the 10th grade entrance exam scores for the 2025-2026 school year, the faces of the two valedictorians were officially revealed. They are Lu Tran Quynh Lan, a student at Tran Quoc Toan 1 Secondary School (Thu Duc City) and Nguyen Minh Thu, a student at Pham Van Chieu Secondary School (Go Vap District). Both students scored 28.75 points and achieved a perfect score in Math.

Quynh Lan not only achieved a perfect score in Math but also surprised everyone by achieving 9.25 points in Literature – a rare score for a candidate taking the Math exam. In addition, Lan achieved 9.5 points in Foreign Language and 7 points in Math.

"I didn't think I could get such a high score in Literature. When I did the test, I was only expecting about 8 points, so when I saw the result, I was really surprised," Lan said.

Talking about the secret to getting a high score in Literature, Lan said she allocated her time reasonably to solve the questions and maintain coherence in her presentation. Lan spent about 15-20 minutes on the reading comprehension section, 25 minutes on the literary essay section. For the social essay section, Lan spent up to 30 minutes doing the test and tried to expand her ideas to satisfy the examiner.

With Math as her forte, Lan achieved full marks thanks to her effective time management. She completed the first three questions in 30 minutes. The more difficult questions, 4 and 5, were solved in 10 and 20 minutes, respectively, giving her time to review and edit. “I did the test quite quickly but still carefully, trying to present clearly and with enough solutions to get full marks,” Lan shared.

Despite losing 0.5 points in Foreign Language due to a careless mistake, Lan still maintained her optimism and confidence. When she learned that she was one of the two valedictorians, the female student said her first feeling was surprise. “I thought I was only the salutatorian because I lost points in English,” Lan said.

Ms. Tran Thanh Ha (Lan’s mother) could not hide her pride when her daughter achieved high results in the stressful exam. “She studied well in all subjects, but her Literature score this time really exceeded expectations,” Ms. Ha said.

Lan plans to study in a specialized math class at Tran Dai Nghia High School for the Gifted. After graduating from high school, she aims to participate in the national math competition and invest more in English to expand her learning opportunities.

Good at all three subjects and dream of studying abroad

Despite being the valedictorian of the 10th grade entrance exam in Ho Chi Minh City this year with an impressive score, Nguyen Minh Thu (student of Pham Van Chieu Secondary School, Go Vap District) still modestly said that she did not dare to expect a perfect score in Math because she was worried that she might be deducted points for small mistakes.

During the review process, Thu focused on consolidating basic knowledge, practicing careful presentation and always allocating time reasonably when doing the test. "I finished the test as soon as I could so as not to waste time going back to check," the female student revealed her secret.

Not only outstanding in Math, Thu also achieved 8.75 points in Literature. According to the female student, this achievement comes from the serious learning process in class and thanks to the inspirational teaching method of the teacher. When writing, she always tries to relate to reality in the social discussion section and writes literary discussion with real emotions, which are nurtured from the habit of reading books regularly.

In English, Thu was among 488 candidates in the city who achieved a perfect score. A month before the exam, the female student practiced solving two English questions every day and asked the teacher for comments and corrections. “English is not just about grammar or formulas, but also requires a rich vocabulary. Practicing questions helps me recognize the types of questions, increase my reflexes and gain a deeper understanding of the grammar patterns I have learned,” Thu said.

Before taking the 10th grade entrance exam of Ho Chi Minh City, Thu also passed the 10th grade entrance exam of Gifted High School of Ho Chi Minh City National University.

"I decided to choose to major in Mathematics at Tran Dai Nghia High School for the Gifted and hope to study abroad in the future, so I will continue to invest more in English," Thu shared.

According to Ms. Phan Thi Song Phuong, the homeroom teacher and also the Literature teacher, Thu is a special student, not only good at Math but also has a very good literary mind. "She is very creative in studying Literature, never showing complacency but always quietly shining in her own way," Ms. Phuong commented.
