The Department of Sports and Physical Training clarifies the case of athlete Pham Nhu Phuong accusing the coach of falsifying wages.

At 9:00 a.m. on January 18, the Department of Physical Education and Sports held a meeting regarding the athletes accusing the coach of the national women's gymnastics team of overstating training fees. Attending this meeting were leaders of the National Sports Training Center I, the High Performance Sports Department I, the Financial Planning and Accounting Department, and the Training Management Department of the Hanoi National Sports Training Center and the gymnastics team's coaching staff.

Earlier, on the morning of January 17, athlete Pham Nhu Phuong gave an interview to a newspaper, saying that the coaches and athletes of the national gymnastics team received false wages for training during the training period. According to this athlete, although they did not practice on Sundays, the gymnastics team members still shared the wages for "extra hours training".

Overtime pay is 540,000 VND/day, athletes receive half, the rest is divided into funds and some expenses. According to the initial explanation, this money is used for internal and external affairs, buying more medical supplies and training supplies.

Leaders of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism said they have requested clarification and strict handling, but the incident needs time to be specifically verified to avoid mistakes.

In addition to this incident, the Department of Sports and Physical Training previously dismissed two coaches, Nguyen Ha Thanh and Nguyen Thuy Duong, from the national team. These two coaches directly managed Pham Nhu Phuong in the national team and the Hanoi unit.

According to the Department of Sports and Physical Training, the two coaches did not report Pham Nhu Phuong’s request for leave from training and hid the information from the head coach of the national team. In addition, Ms. Thuy Duong admitted to collecting a portion of Pham Nhu Phuong’s bonus. However, this was a personal matter between Ms. Duong and the athlete and had nothing to do with the national team’s coaching staff.

The Department of Sports and Physical Training will coordinate with the Hanoi unit to handle the case of coach Nguyen Thuy Duong collecting money from Pham Nhu Phuong.
