The 2024 US presidential election promises to be dramatic.
Bloomberg News/Morning Consult conducted the survey from January 16 to 22, after the Iowa caucuses, which former President Trump won on January 15, and before the New Hampshire primary on January 23.
The states that will be polled include Arizona, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Michigan, North Carolina, Wisconsin and Nevada. This is a group of 7 states that are expected to have a significant impact on the 2024 US election results because the number of votes that the Republican and Democratic candidates are expected to receive will be very close.
In the absence of legal trouble, Mr. Trump leads President Joe Biden by an average of about 6 points in the above 7 states.
However, the survey found that 53% of voters in the battleground states would not vote for Mr Trump if he were convicted in court. That number increased to 55% if he were sentenced to prison.
Mr. Trump faces four separate criminal trials this year, though his lawyers are seeking to delay them until after the election, or even cancel them.
In total, the former US leader faces 91 criminal charges in the above trials.
Voters were also divided on whether states should be able to remove Trump from the ballot, with 45% saying states do not have the right to remove Trump from the ballot, while 21% felt that could only happen if Trump is convicted of a crime.
