On the afternoon of March 21, a press conference was held in Ho Chi Minh City to introduce the third season of IRONMAN 70.3 in Vietnam. Da Nang City is still a favorite destination for the sport considered for "superhumans" as it requires a strong and vigorous physical foundation to complete the three most intense competitions in the world.
IRONMAN 70.3 Vietnam 2017 will take place in Da Nang on May 7 with the participation of more than 1,100 professional athletes from many age groups from more than 50 countries around the world . Host Vietnam is the team with the largest number of athletes with more than 300 contestants.
Athletes will compete in 3 combined events: swimming, cycling, and half marathon running with a total distance of up to 113 km (equal to 70.3 miles, hence the name IRONMAN 70.3). Specifically, athletes will compete in swimming at a distance of 1.9 km, then switch to cycling at a distance of 90 km and running 21 km to the finish line. The competition route is at Son Thuy beach and on the roads along the pristine coastline, through famous landmarks of Da Nang city. This is the race track known as "The best triathlon race in Asia in 2016".
From the competition, there will be 30 slots for outstanding athletes of each age group to have the opportunity to participate in the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship in Chattanooga, Tennessee, USA. This year, there will be 2 more slots reserved for the best male and female Vietnamese athletes.
2017 is also the first time the “SHOWDOWN DANANG” group will be introduced to compete in the IRONMAN 70.3 Vietnam tournament. This group includes more than 10 of the best athletes in the region who will compete, many of whom have won recent 70.3 tournaments or are among the top athletes in the world championship.
The “Showdown Da Nang” group will be a fierce, exciting and interesting competition, serving as a precursor to the 2017 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship in Chattanooga, Tennessee, USA this coming September.
Along with the IRONMAN 70.3 Vietnam competition, there will be a Sunrise Sprint competition (abbreviated as S2) with a short distance race to help new athletes get acquainted with triathlon.
This competition includes a 750m sea swim, a 20km bike ride and a 5km run along the Da Nang coast. In addition, there is the IRONKIDS Vietnam competition for young athletes in two events: running and two events: running and swimming.
According to Mr. Nguyen Xuan Binh, Deputy Director of the Da Nang Department of Tourism, the competition is a great opportunity to promote Da Nang's tourism potential by attracting thousands of athletes and fans from all over the world. The city has included the IRONMAN 70.3 competition in its annual organization plan for 5 years and will fully support the competition to be successful.
