Wild pineapple
Many tourists who come to the island are introduced by the locals to the dried wild pineapple product, a precious herb, providing nutritional value, supporting the treatment of liver disease, kidney stones, diabetes... so some local households are processing it into Phu Quy Pineapple Tea. Being the "land of wild pineapple", Phu Quy is covered with this plant, growing along the coast, on hillsides and vacant lands.
There are two types of wild pineapple, including turmeric pineapple and fire pineapple. The turmeric pineapple has a sweeter taste and is rarer, often used to soak in wine, priced at 50,000 - 70,000 VND/fruit. The main harvest season of wild pineapple is around the 11th and 12th lunar months every year. The best time to harvest wild pineapple is when the pineapple begins to ripen, the skin is dark, the eyes are cracked and hard. Ms. Huynh Kim Hoa (Tam Thanh village) - one of the long-time wild pineapple buyers said: A fresh pineapple weighs about 1.5 - 2 kg, when dried it will weigh 5 - 7 taels. After purchasing pineapples from the people, her family will separate each segment, split them into small pieces, then dry them for over 10 days and export them to the mainland, each time about 1 ton/month, depending on the time. In recent years, the high demand has forced people to harvest young fruits but still cannot meet the supply, most of the products have to be sold according to orders.
According to Oriental medicine, wild pineapple has a sweet taste, neutral properties, is a precious medicinal herb that helps regulate yin and yang, strengthen the spleen, benefit the blood, detoxify alcohol... Thanks to these uses, wild pineapple is favored by tourists, bought for use and as gifts when coming to Phu Quy. Currently, dried wild pineapple is sold for 80,000 - 100,000 VND/kg.

Hot beef
Another famous specialty that every tourist must try when coming to Phu Quy is “hot beef”. Just hearing the name is enough to make many people curious and want to learn about this special dish. This name not only suggests a hot dish, but also emphasizes the freshness of the beef, which retains its sweet, soft and firm flavor, completely different from beef from the mainland. In particular, beef on Phu Quy Island is grazed freely on the grass, usually young cows (calves), so the meat is low in fat, chewy, sweet, and rich in nutrients. If importing beef from the mainland, the wholesale points must raise it for a while longer to reach the same quality.
Currently, there are several restaurants on the island selling this specialty such as: Hoa Thuong, Thanh Binh, Thu Vien... When coming to the restaurants, visitors will be quoted a price of beef of about 250,000 - 300,000 VND/kg, which is the price of fresh meat. Then, depending on taste, visitors can request to have it processed on the spot into many dishes such as: raw beef with lemon, stir-fried beef, beef dipped in vinegar, steamed beef with ginger... However, the beef dish that most visitors enjoy the most is grilled beef. Visitors will choose for themselves delicious pieces of meat, just add a little fish sauce and grill on a charcoal stove. Fresh beef only needs to be grilled just right to feel the sweet and soft taste in each piece of meat, served with raw vegetables and a bowl of spicy dipping sauce, it is irresistibly delicious. During the peak summer season or on holidays, the restaurants are often full, visitors have to wait quite a long time to enjoy this specialty.
In addition, like other seas and islands, fresh seafood will be the top priority choice of many people. Particularly in Phu Quy, visitors must try the extremely famous king crab, because it is considered the king of all crabs. Spring (from December to March of the lunar calendar) is the time when crab meat is the most delicious. At that time, the crab meat will be thick, firm, sweet and chewy, the crab shell will be softer and crispier, and the crab will also have more roe. However, this is a "luxury" specialty with a quite high price, from 700,000 - 1 million VND/kg depending on size and time.
Your trip will be more interesting if you try all the specialties of this special zone!
