Convince actors with respect
* REPORTER: What experiences did making the film Hai Muoi give you to continue making Chi Ngai Em Nang ?
* Director - Meritorious Artist Vu Thanh Vinh: Those are the storytelling and the script - the two elements I am weakest at. When making the film Hai Muoi , I only did what I liked. At that time, I wanted to make a film about my father, write the script and make it myself. But in fact, to write a script, to tell a story with cinematic language requires academic knowledge, not just liking it is enough.
With the first film, I put too much of my own feelings into it so the theme was not new, the way of telling was not modern. All of that I summarized in the second film, telling a story with a better script and a theme that is close to the heart, not rambling, and at the same time the language is more concise. I am still trying and I see that I still have to learn more.
* Can you tell us more about the script development process with the team of screenwriter Binh Bong Bo?
* When I met the screenwriter Tran Minh (Binh Bong Bot), I told him the idea, based on my wife's true story. From there, we worked together on the script for 6 months.
Before, when I wrote a script, I didn't have any objections because I followed my own ideas. But with Chi Ngan Em Nang, there were many objections. Because of that, the script required careful selection, meetings and discussions. If it was not good, it had to be completely rewritten.
* Working with many main and supporting stars in the film, how do you divide their roles?
* With this project, I feel a good connection. The experience after the first film is that I prepared very carefully. Even when the actors read the script, if they are not satisfied, they can immediately object. I also allow them to rewrite the dialogue in their own way, accepting debate. Like Le Khanh often makes many changes and I suggest that she can try to do it her own way. If it is not okay, she has to do it my way. That is how I convince the actors.
I even split the actors into pairs to work together before sitting together. When the actors feel satisfied, understand the character and follow the psychology, the plot will develop more easily. At that time, the director can also control them easily. In my opinion, the pre-production stage is very important and decisive.
* With this project, do you expect better revenue than Hai Muoi ?
* I am very happy because the Vietnamese film market is developing well. Maybe because I entered the film industry a bit late, I have to try harder. Therefore, I hope this film will have better results than Hai Muoi.
Not "greedy"
* Is it because you understood the market situation that you decided to switch to cinema and not continue doing television?
* Currently, I leave the production of television programs to another team. I will completely switch to cinema, which means focusing fully and starting a longer-term roadmap. In the near future, I will also stand behind to do the work of a producer. When I have penetrated the market and understand its difficulties, I will invite another director to do it, standing behind will feel more secure.
* What do you think is the biggest difficulty of the Vietnamese film market at present?
* We see movies that earn hundreds of billions of dong in revenue. But at the same time, there are still directors and filmmakers who are having difficulty maintaining their jobs. That is the fierceness of the market in general, including the film industry.
For some films, it is a fortune for the director and investor. Many people have to borrow money, sell their entire assets to make films and still be in debt. When meeting many investors, no one dares to say that investing in this or that film will be profitable. The potential for the development of the Vietnamese film market is huge but it is also very fierce, each filmmaker must know how to balance it.
Like with Hai Muoi , I know my strength so I only do what I can. That film, the investment is not much so the management part is also lighter and I also have a little profit. In my opinion, when you first start your career, don't be greedy to do something too big, if you can't manage it, you will fail. My advice is to know where you are, try to do within the allowed scope, don't exceed your investment threshold and find a moderate segment. That will help avoid risks.
* Will you change the genre for your next project?
* I think I will still stick to the family theme, however the story will have to be new, have inner strength and be told faster. I realize that audiences today are no longer patient, they demand that the opening part not be long-winded, go straight into the story. But there are also film genres that sometimes need a little patience to find its beauty. Therefore, I will find a way to balance. For the next project, I am preparing the script, when I am most satisfied, I will start filming.
“If you don’t have “riches” to make movies, you can’t do it. “Rich” here means rich in investment, emotion, and especially rich in the desire to tell your story. If you’re not “rich” enough, you can’t convey the message to the audience,” said director and Meritorious Artist Vu Thanh Vinh.
