Apple has just introduced two opposite poles in its new iPhone lineup: the iPhone Air, the thinnest phone ever at just 5.8mm thick, with a modest 3,149 mAh battery; and the iPhone 17 Pro Max, the iPhone model with the largest battery in Apple history at 5,088 mAh, an 8.6% increase over the iPhone 16 Pro Max.
Meanwhile, the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Pro also received significant battery upgrades, reaching 3,692 mAh and 4,252 mAh respectively, surpassing their predecessors.
To answer the question of real-world battery life, tech YouTube channel Mrwhosetheboss conducted a comprehensive test, comparing the iPhone Air, iPhone 17 series with the iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Pro Max, and even the top Android rival, the Galaxy S25 Ultra.

Product samples were compared by Mrwhosetheboss in terms of battery life (Photo cut from clip).
Surprising results from battery test
Among the tested devices, the iPhone 16 with a 60Hz display has the advantage of battery saving, while the iPhone 17 has been upgraded to a 120Hz display, marking the first time a standard iPhone version has this technology.
The iPhone 17 Pro Max leads the pack in battery capacity with 5,088 mAh, followed by the Galaxy S25 Ultra with 5,000 mAh. Unsurprisingly, the iPhone Air has the smallest battery, followed by the iPhone 16 with 3,561 mAh.
To ensure fairness, all devices were charged to 100% and set to the same screen brightness. Mrwhosetheboss let the smartphones operate continuously with heavy tasks such as playing games, watching videos , browsing the web, and recording videos until the battery was completely drained.

iPhone Air "fell" first, iPhone 17 Pro Max was the champion
With the most modest battery, the iPhone Air was the first device to "collapse" after 7 hours and 18 minutes of continuous use.
The iPhone 16, thanks to its 60Hz display, lasted 9 hours and 51 minutes, significantly better than the iPhone Air despite using the older A18 chip.
The two new generation iPhone models, iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Pro, achieved 10 hours 28 minutes and 10 hours 48 minutes, respectively.
Notably, the iPhone 16 Pro Max, despite being launched last year, still showed impressive performance with 12 hours and 15 minutes of use, surpassing the Galaxy S25 Ultra (11 hours and 58 minutes) to take second place.
The crown for battery life belongs to the iPhone 17 Pro Max. With a large battery and the new generation A19 Pro chip, this device lasts up to 13 hours continuously, far surpassing all competitors in the test.
Note: Mrwhosetheboss's test results are for reference only. Actual battery life may vary depending on user usage. Using a smartphone with a constantly bright screen will drain the battery faster than normal usage.
