Based on the score distribution of high school graduation exam subjects announced by the Ministry of Education and Training this morning (July 17), experts all said that the average score in many subjects has increased compared to previous years. This may also cause the benchmark score in some combinations to increase as well.
Specifically, Professor Nguyen Dinh Duc, Chairman of the Council of the University of Technology, Hanoi National University, acknowledged that this year's exam score distribution showed positive changes. Scores below 5 in all subjects showed significant improvement, even in subjects that usually have relatively below average scores such as Math, History, and Physics.
In addition, in the score spectrum of subjects such as Math, Physics, especially Chemistry and Geography, the number of 10 points is also higher than in previous years. Therefore, the predicted benchmark scores in traditional combinations such as A00, A01, B00, C00, D01 will also increase.
“However, through the assessment of the exam score distribution, we still see that the scores of Social Science subjects such as Literature and Geography have a high rate of excellent scores and low rates of below average scores; while Natural Science subjects such as Mathematics and Physics have a high rate of excellent scores, although they have improved, the below average scores are still higher than other subjects,” Mr. Duc assessed.
Therefore, Mr. Duc believes that the orientation and admission work for university in the Natural Sciences group needs to be paid more attention and focus.
Meanwhile, Professor Pham Hong Quang, Chairman of the Thai Nguyen University Council, assessed that looking at the exam score spectrum, there is a convergence, reflecting that there is no large deviation in high school education.
“From the score distribution results, I am pleased that from remote areas to developed areas, the convergence of general education is shown in all subject scores, the difference is not much and not significant. With such a distribution graph, it proves that the teaching organization process, the question creation process, and data analysis have met the requirements,” said Professor Quang.
According to this expert, for the 2018 general education program that is being implemented and will be held next year, the teaching and learning process needs to focus on basic knowledge, balance between fields, and emphasize the combination, interdisciplinary and integrated nature.
"Thus, in the process of evaluating students in next year's exam, the questions will also focus on this content, assessing the overall academic ability of the students and then helping them have the thinking and methods to later solve practical problems in life," said Professor Quang.
According to Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Duc Son, Principal of Hanoi National University of Education, this year's high school graduation exam scores are distributed quite well, for example in History. In addition, the English score distribution has also begun to show more positive changes compared to previous years.
"With many score ranges and differentiation of results between subjects, this year's high school graduation exam scores are completely qualified for schools to base their admissions on admission combinations," Mr. Son shared.
Regarding the exam questions this year, Mr. Son assessed that he had done a good job and was gradually able to access new exam question technologies. However, he still hoped that the exam questions in the following exams would be more uniform, with no large difference between the scores of the subjects. This would create a common ground for assessing the quality of teaching and learning.
