The unique Ferrari SC40 is inspired by the legendary Ferrari F40

The Ferrari SC40 is based on the "common" 296 GTB from the Special Projects program, bringing the spirit of the legendary Ferrari F40 into modern design.

Ferrari's Special Projects division has just announced another special supercar. It's called the Ferrari SC40, and as the name suggests, it's the successor to a famous car Ferrari created a long time ago - the F40.

Not only does it mark the 40th anniversary of the company's founding, the F40 is also the last model that Enzo Ferrari - the founder of the Italian supercar company - personally supervised and approved the project before his death. With the pioneering use of lightweight materials such as Kevlar or new technologies such as turbocharging.

The Ferrari F40 is a supercar that most Ferrari enthusiasts consider to be the pinnacle of Ferrari values. It is said that the F40 inspired the “sharp, angular lines” of the SC40.

Like all Ferrari special projects, this is a one-off, designed and built for a discerning client. However, Ferrari did not simply copy the supercar from the 1980s.

“The SC40 lettering embossed on the wing is a clear tribute to Ferrari’s iconic supercar,” Ferrari said, “but the goal was not to create a literal reinterpretation, but a car with its own distinct personality.”

The SC40 clearly looks inspired by, but not entirely different from, the F40, although the platform underneath is familiar. It’s a 296 GTB with a 3.0-litre V6 turbo hybrid, rear-wheel drive and a mighty 830PS and 740Nm of torque. It can accelerate from 0-100km/h in 2.9 seconds.

Back to the styling, because that’s really the only thing that makes the SC40 stand out from the 296 GTB. Ferrari’s design director, Flavio Manzoni, instructed his team to give the SC40 “square, muscular volumes” and an “industrial” aesthetic to mimic the rough, angular language of the F40.

From a distance, the car's shape is quite recognizable, from the low, long nose to the fixed rear spoiler. The only difference is that the headlights extend down to the lower air intake instead of being located above like the F40. This air intake extends to the entire front bumper. It's 2025, so the pop-up headlight design like the F40 cannot be recreated due to regulations on pedestrian safety in case of an accident.

But aside from the headlights, Ferrari still manages to replicate the F40's spirit. On the sides, for example, the F40's side air intakes are modern, while at the rear, a familiar spoiler juts out from the engine cover. The V6 engine is shown off through "smoked Lexan vents," just like the F40's V8.

Kevlar, in its signature yellow hue, returns to the interior of a Ferrari, repurposed for this SC40 project in the footwells, behind the seats, and on the floor mats. The same material is used for the steering wheel, dashboard, and engine compartment. Elsewhere in the interior, Alcantara is used.

Perhaps the only thing that deviated from what the F40 pioneered was the special white paint job, named SC40 after the car. Previously, all F40s produced by Ferrari were Rosso Corsa red and right-hand drive – any other color or right-hand drive cars were subsequently personalised by their owners.

Ferrari said: “The name of this car pays homage to the F40, Ferrari’s legendary supercar launched in July 1987. The SC40 recalls sharp, angular lines, cleverly combined with softer surface transitions, giving the car a modern feel and a strong, unmistakable identity.” As the SC40 is a one-off, as usual, Ferrari has delivered it to the customer and has not announced its price.
