Iskander launches lightning strike to wipe out Ukraine's UAV base

The base is important for Ukraine, as it deploys long-range attack UAVs aimed at targets within Russian territory.

The Russia-Ukraine conflict continued to escalate when the Russian Defense Ministry announced that it had carried out a precision strike using Iskander missiles on a Ukrainian drone launch site near Kharkiv. The information was released on October 17, the attack destroyed a series of military equipment and vehicles in the area.

In an official statement, the Russian Defense Ministry said the Iskander missile hit the area used as a staging and launching point for the Lyuty long-range UAV - one of Kiev's main attack UAV lines. "All targets were identified and accurately destroyed, this was confirmed by live images recorded during the airstrike," the statement said.

According to data released by the Russian Ministry of Defense, the attack destroyed four tractor-trailers carrying a total of 65 Lyuty UAVs, along with five launchers and various other support equipment.

The site of the attack is near the settlement of Martovoye, about 50 km east of Kharkiv, an area that has been used by Ukraine to deploy UAV units operating along the eastern front line. Satellite images and video released by the Russian Ministry of Defense show large explosions and intense fire after the Iskander missile hit its target.

The Iskander ballistic missile is considered one of the most formidable and high-precision tactical weapons in Russia's arsenal. The system is capable of striking strategic targets at a distance of 500 to 700 km, covering most of Ukraine's key logistics routes and military bases.

With supersonic flight speed, flexible trajectory change ability and powerful warhead, Iskander is almost "invisible" to all existing air defense systems.

The attack on Martovoye is part of a campaign to suppress Ukraine’s UAV strike capabilities, which have increased significantly in recent months. Kiev has repeatedly deployed long-range Lyuty UAVs to strike deep into Russian territory, including in areas such as Belgorod, Kursk, and even Moscow.

According to military analysts, Russia's focus on attacking Ukraine's logistics facilities and UAV launch points shows that Moscow is prioritizing the strategy of "cutting off the enemy's long-range attack arm". This attack is aimed at paralyzing the ability to deploy long-range UAVs, minimizing the risk to Russian territory from deep raids.

“If the UAV launch sites and storage facilities are continuously destroyed, Kiev’s ability to sustain strikes deep into Russian territory will be significantly reduced,” said military expert Aleksandr Mikhaylov. He said this is part of Russia’s long-term strategy to destroy its counterattack capabilities.

In addition, the long-range Lyuty UAV was developed by Ukraine to respond to Russian missile and Shahed UAV attacks. With a range of more than 1,000 km and a 50 kg warhead, Lyuty is considered a “cheap but effective weapon”. However, during the preparation and launch stages, this type of UAV is very vulnerable to precision attacks.

Ukraine has yet to confirm or respond to Russia’s claims. However, independent sources have reported several large explosions and plumes of black smoke near Kharkiv in recent days. Several Telegram channels in Ukraine also reported that air defense systems were activated on the night of October 16 to the morning of October 17, coinciding with the attack.

Observers say Russia continues to use Iskander missiles to maintain its superiority in long-range firepower and precision strike capabilities. The attack near Kharkiv proves that the Eastern theater remains the center of the conflict. As UAVs and missiles play an increasingly decisive role, high-tech warfare has truly begun.
