Urgent reinforcement of landslides before the risk of opening new sea gates

The local government is coordinating with functional forces to urgently calculate a timely reinforcement plan, taking advantage of the sunny weather this week to carry out construction in order to cope with storms that may be stronger in the coming time, minimizing coastal erosion and the risk of opening new sea gates.

Due to the impact of storm No. 10 and consecutive natural disasters in recent times, on September 28 and 29, the coastal section passing through Hoa Duan residential group, Thuan An ward ( Hue city) is experiencing severe erosion with a length of about 1km. The coastline is eroding 50-70m deep into the mainland, affecting about 500 households and facing the risk of opening a new sea gate.

Mr. Le Dinh Phong, Chairman of Thuan An Ward People's Committee, said that the seawater erosion has damaged the pedestrian embankment through Hoa Duan dam area; many restaurants and shops have also been swept away by the seawater. Households living near the area affected by seawater erosion should proactively evacuate when there are big waves and strong winds.

Hue City leaders and local authorities together with functional forces inspected the landslide situation for urgent handling.

On the evening of September 29, after inspecting the actual situation of landslides in Thuan An ward's coastal area, Vice Chairman of Hue City People's Committee Hoang Hai Minh requested the locality to coordinate with relevant forces to urgently calculate a timely reinforcement plan, taking advantage of the sunny weather this week to carry out construction to cope with storms that may be stronger in the coming time. Construction must be carried out urgently, minimizing coastal erosion and the risk of opening new sea gates.

Mr. Hoang Hai Minh also requested the People's Committee of Thuan An Ward to quickly compile statistics and report the damage so that the city can promptly regulate the budget for reinforcement and declare a state of emergency for the coastal landslide in the area, ensuring safety for people and coastal works.
