Causes and predictions

According to livestock experts, the main reason for the sharp increase in pork prices is due to a local shortage of supply, while consumption demand has not fluctuated much after the Tet holiday.

It is forecasted that the price of live pigs may exceed 80,000 VND/kg in the near future, but it is unlikely to increase further because the price difference between domestic and imported pork is at 20,000 VND/kg, creating conditions for imported pork to flood the market.

In another development, African swine fever is becoming more complicated in Ha Tinh, with four localities including Cam Xuyen, Thach Ha, Ha Tinh city and Huong Khe district recording outbreaks. Since the Lunar New Year, more than 300 pigs have been destroyed due to the disease. Functional sectors and local authorities are focusing on implementing measures to prevent and limit the spread of the disease on a large scale.

The high price of live pigs along with the complicated developments of African swine fever pose great challenges for the livestock industry and consumers in the coming time.
