Starting a business from an abandoned pond

I had the opportunity to visit and experience the snail farm combined with agricultural tourism of Mr. Nguyen Huu Nhon in village 4, Tra Tan commune, Lam Dong province. The image of a young farmer in protective clothing, drenched in sweat, feet wading in mud, working hard in the pond impressed me. Because that young farmer is the Director of Thuong Nhan Ganoderma Mushroom Company Limited, currently investing and operating 3 snail farms in Duc Linh, Hoai Duc, Tra Tan communes of Lam Dong province. Here, the model of raising black apple snails combined with experiential tourism is increasingly known, creating a brand, bringing high profits, solving jobs, increasing stable income for many farming households.

Mr. Nguyen Huu Nhon shared: “Recently, I have been purchasing snails to create outlets for people. After harvesting, the snails are mainly processed into medicinal black snail sausages, supplying to distribution systems, food agents, restaurants and eateries.”

Looking back at the current 6-hectare black apple snail farm, the farm owner said that since 2017, after researching the black apple snail farming model, he realized that the investment capital was low, the technique was simple, there were few diseases and the market was still open. However, the initial process also went through many failed experiments for many reasons. By 2019, Mr. Nhon had launched a product processed from black apple snails called "Medicinal black apple snail patties", which has been recognized as a 3-star OCOP product.

Snail farming combined with experiential tourism

Mr. Nguyen Huu Nhon confided: “If only selling snails, the profit is not high. I take advantage of the countryside with peaceful landscapes and fresh air - something that city people really need. I came up with the idea of combining snail farming with experiential tourism. This is a new, creative direction, both bringing economic efficiency and promoting community development.”

Accordingly, the snail farm also opens its doors to welcome tourists, especially students and youth groups to visit, experience the snail farming process, and learn about clean agriculture. One of the highlights is the activity "A day as a farmer", guiding visitors to harvest and process black apple snails on the spot. Along with that, building an experience space associated with a green - clean - beautiful landscape, creating relaxation and connection with nature.

With a large scale of operation, Mr. Nguyen Huu Nhon has recruited dozens of local workers, giving priority to young people and people in difficult circumstances. On the other hand, he provides free technical guidance to people who want to replicate the black snail farming model, linking product consumption to satellite farming households, ensuring stable output. Mr. Nguyen Huu Nhon's thorny entrepreneurial journey to the current "sweet fruit" has inspired many other young people to start their own businesses.

With his efforts and creativity in starting a business over the years, Mr. Nguyen Huu Nhon has received a number of achievements: "Luong Dinh Cua" Award in 2022; Outstanding achievements in studying and doing business from the People's Committee of Binh Thuan province in 2023; National title of Advanced Youth following Uncle Ho's teachings in 2023; First prize in the "4th Binh Thuan Province Startup Ideas and Projects Contest, 2023"; Certificate of Merit from the Committee of the Vietnam Youth Union of Binh Thuan province for outstanding ethnic and religious youth in 2024. In September 2025, he was one of the typical young people honored at the 1st Lam Dong Province Patriotic Emulation Congress, period 2025 - 2030.
