The new payment method will be applied on 30 bus routes with more than 600 vehicles belonging to transport units including: Viet Thang Inter-Provincial Transport and Tourism Cooperative; Bao Yen Construction Service and Tourism Company Limited; City Transport Joint Stock Company - Citranco; Saigon Bus Joint Stock Company; Transport Joint Stock Company 26.
Passengers can use contactless NAPAS cards (domestic ATM cards) issued by 28 banks to tap payment directly on card acceptance devices installed on buses. In addition, another payment method applied is tapping payment with smartphones or smart watches integrated with NAPAS digital cards, which is being deployed by some banks.
Some banks have deployed NAPAS card digitization to allow "touch" payment for bus tickets.
Passengers using NAPAS card payment when taking the bus will save time, no need to top up a separate card or use cash to buy paper tickets. Getting on and off the bus becomes faster, limiting queuing. and contribute to reducing cash use, in line with modern consumption trends.
This is a follow-up to the success of the automatic ticket payment system on Metro Line 1 (Ben Thanh - Suoi Tien) launched earlier this year.
According to assessments, Ho Chi Minh City is currently a pioneer in implementing many modern electronic payment methods for the public transport network, contributing to promoting green transport, reducing pressure on personal transport and moving towards a smart city.
NAPAS card has many benefits
Mr. Nguyen Dang Hung, Deputy General Director of NAPAS shared : With more than 80 million contactless NAPAS cards in circulation, implementing this payment on Ho Chi Minh City buses helps passengers just tap their cards to go, without having to queue to buy tickets or use cash, thereby moving faster, safer and more conveniently. This is both a new convenience for people, expanding the application from the metro system to many other public transport methods, and at the same time an important step to build a modern, transparent transport infrastructure, contributing to promoting smart cities and a cashless society in Vietnam, as well as in line with the general development trend of the world .
Mr. Le Hoan (Deputy Director - Ho Chi Minh City Public Transport Management Center) said: The cashless payment system has been deployed on 96 bus routes with 1,456 vehicles. Relevant units have actively coordinated to complete payment equipment, meeting technical requirements.
"Contactless payments will improve passenger experience, encourage the use of public transport, thereby reducing personal traffic and moving towards a sustainable transport system," said Mr. Le Hoan.
Mr. Pham Duc Duy, Deputy Director of Sacombank Personal Banking, shared: Sacombank always strives to apply modern financial technology to life. This project is the next step in the strategy of expanding the digital payment ecosystem in the transport sector, bringing a seamless, safe and economical experience to customers. We believe that this convenience will be the motivation for people to prioritize public transport.
The cooperation between NAPAS, Sacombank and the Ho Chi Minh City Public Transport Management Center demonstrates a commitment to applying modern payment technology to public transport services , contributing to promoting national digital transformation. With the national payment infrastructure operated by NAPAS, the implementation capacity of Sacombank and the support of the management agency, the project promises to bring practical changes, bringing Vietnam closer to the goal of a cashless society and smart cities.
In the next phase, the automatic ticket payment system is expected to be synchronized on all 138 routes with about 2,221 vehicles, contributing to completing the digitalization roadmap of Ho Chi Minh City's public transport, following the success of the automatic ticket model of Metro Line 1.
Since 2021, NAPAS has started implementing transportation payments using NAPAS cards on the Vinbus electric bus system. The successful expansion to the bus and metro systems in Ho Chi Minh City is a testament to NAPAS's continuous efforts in building a synchronous and seamless card payment ecosystem, not only in transportation but also in many areas of social life.
