Asia is considered to have the best street food in the world , with plastic stools, flaming woks and delicious smells wafting through the streets. “ A trip to these culinary paradises means you will never go hungry,” wrote Time Out magazine (UK).
Affordable, accessible and delicious are the criteria that the magazine's reporters and culinary experts chose for the list of cities with outstanding street food in Asia.
Hanoi ranked second, considered to have a culinary treasure trove with delicious dishes hidden in deep alleys, in small rooms that require access through narrow staircases or on crowded street corners.
“ Queue up in front of Banh Mi 25 in the Old Quarter for grilled pork sandwiches, find a steaming bowl of Northern-style pho as you wander down a dark corridor, climb the spiral staircase at Ms. Minh’s pho stall on Hang Trong Street, or grab a seat at Banh Cuon Ba Loc to enjoy a rice flour dish filled with minced pork, wood ear mushrooms, and shiitake mushrooms,” Time Out describes.
This magazine advises that if you only have time to enjoy one dish, don't miss bun cha, a dish considered a symbol of Hanoi cuisine. A bowl of sweet and sour sauce, grilled pork in balls and pieces, served with vermicelli and raw vegetables is the perfect choice. The bun cha stall in a small alley at 74 Hang Quat, Hoan Kiem Ward, is recommended by experts for diners to try.
Other cities on the list include Penang (Malaysia), Singapore, Mumbai (India), Chiang Mai (Thailand), Tainan (Taiwan), Osaka (Japan), Bangkok (Thailand), Pnom Penh (Cambodia) and Chengdu (China).
The cuisine of Penang, the top city, is described as a cultural fusion of Malay, Chinese and Indian. Each local will suggest different dishes that visitors will not be able to fully enjoy after several tries. The list of recommended dishes includes char kuey teow (stir-fried noodles), assam laksa (sour laksa), roti canai (Indian flatbread), hokkien mee (prawn noodle soup).
